Used to be completely normal on older Fiestas -- we had a 1984 car that whined on overrun in 2nd gear from 20,000 to 90,000 miles without getting any worse.
Since then we've had two Nissans and a Hyundai that have both been much the same. Usually seems to be accompanied by a slight whine in 3rd when accelerating -- maybe someone can explain the correlation?
I don't know if this gearbox is prone still -- certainly the Focuses I've driven don't suffer from the problem.
Regardless, it's more likely to be a characteristic of the car than anything untoward.

Ford make two different FWD g/boxes-B5(also available as 4-speed) and the MTX .You can tell which you have by selecting reverse. If the lever moves against a spring,it's a B5-If you need to lift a collar under the g/lever knob,it's a MTX.They use different lubricants!!
