Wait for the ticket to arrive in the post (just in case the PA was bluffing) but then pay quickly while you can still get the discounted rate.

I agree Scribe - it is trivial,I fully intend to pay and did not expect any sympathy. Should have mentioned that there was a case some time ago where the issued ticket was not attached to the windscreen, the driver appealed and won.
I believe after that the law changed and it was on this basis that I was questioning its legality (but omitted to say so in my post).
I will wait for the fine to arrive, pay promptly and move on - lifes too short.
Thanks for your reply.

Living in a country this dysfunctional, petty and bureaucratic some people might think life was too long!

Have a read of DVD's "sticky" up at the top of the page. I would cough up me, we all (well the human ones amongst us) take a gamble now and again, sometimes we win sometimes we lose !

Probably coming to a town near you and soon...
I have seen this in Hull. White Belingo style van two up marked traffic control.
It stops at the rear of a column of parked cars, one individual gets out, the van then drives to the front of that column of traffic whilst the first and uniformed individual 'armed' with what looks like a hand held VCR come digital camera proceeds up that column of vehicles.
Be the vehicles on meters, in a loading or in marked disabled bay, she walked around each vehicle, quite slowly, looking like she was recording evidence of (if any) the offence(s) commited and then just as quickly as they arrive they 'scarpered' off.
No old fashioned pen and paper here then...
If this was evidence gathering of traffic parking offences - how many vehicles a day does this two person team get this way?
You can but imagine what the financial reward is to Hull Council by operating this 'aggressive approach' towards parking violation offences and its management.
What little come back do you have (none?) against the hard evidence of a digital image showing why, where and how you illegally parked?

No come back, I'd have thought.
In our area, as in many others I think, the parking people have digital cameras they use to record the offence and to show the issued ticket on the screen of the car.
|
As PU states change to regs earlier this year that will allow a ticket to be sent by post where CEO has started to make out and offender leaves.
Old days had to be placed on vehicle or handed to offender.
Pay - do it early and get the discount.

"Pay - do it early and get the discount"
I intend to do just that. Thanks for the clarification.

Friend of mine is a parking manager - manages the street patrols.
He tells me a number of drivers will lie, pull strokes and lie again in a bid to get off a ticket - hence all the camera evidence.
Another problem is the use of a foreign 50p piece - worth a couple of pence - which some ticket machines read as a pound coin.
|
It will probably be too late now, but I suggest you get a tape measure and a copy of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002. While I cannot condone deliberate flouting of parking restrictions, I also cannot condone authorities that do not maintain their signs and lines in accordance with the law - compliance and enforcement is a two-way street.
|
Steve, this comment isn't directed at you...
But for the life of me I can't understand all this moaning we see about traffic wardens (or whatever they are called these days) just doing their job... the roads these days are overcrowded and thats meant that even short term parking on yellows can cause tailbacks - whats wrong with people these days?? Just park a little further out and walk ffs!! I sometimes use the car to go into town but tend to park outside the ringroad (where restrictions aren't as bad) and walk it - it does me good and I don't have the stress of running round daft in case i get done...
As far as I'm concerned these guys are doing a good job, it now means if i do have to park in town for a short time I actually can do 'cause the 15min bays aren't being used by people to park for an hour! And they are getting the blue badge fiddlers as well... more power to your elbows, chaps!

The parking warden would record all cars-even apparently legally parked-because some of those cars will still be there after the time allowed for them to be there.
|
b308,
whilst i'd agree with your comments to a degree...there is another side to this
how much of our cities, towns and villages are covered with yellow lines, when they don't necessarily need to be. How many of our roads that are wide enough to park coaches in, have yellow lines to stop car parking, when it really wouldn't matter if they did...no doubt done to prevent people driving in general.
i'd agree that selfish parking can be a real nuisance...but...there are many places where a quick couple of minutes isn't really a problem.
if you go abroad, you can often park right o/s where you need to go...whereas here you often have to park half a mile away...why?.........what's wrong with a 20 mins at a time system and actually let people visit the shop they want to
|
Mmm - re abroad I'd agree its easier, but having said, certainly in northern europe, they don't have the problem we have regarding congestion - driving over there is similar to when I was driving in the 70s, plenty of road and not many cars... the places where they do have congestion problems such as large cities they tend to do the same as us!
You hit the nail on the head in your third para, which actually answers your second para - if people didn't park selfishly there would be no need for all the restiction!!
|
Because there will always be people that would try to take advantage and still be there two hours later!!.Many places already operate this sort of system-limited time parking with "no return" for a set number of hours.
|
I do find it odd that when a car is parked somewhere where it should not be, and is presumably causing an obstruction, it is then clamped so that it can't be quickly moved. It thus stays where it is for an extra length of time and causing an obstruction. But, hey, it raises money and that's what it is all about!
|
Any chance of a get-out under the "loading" exception? You probably weren't buying anything heavy enough.
|
"Any chance of a get-out under the "loading" exception?"
Afraid not - large seeded blooomer and a french stick - my baker would have a fit if he thought they were heavy enough.
Incidentally the fine - £50 - was paid a fortnight ago so turned out to be quite expensive bread - nice though !
Only my second ticket in forty years motoring, hopefully it'll be my last.
Regards
|
I like the disc parking system - parking is restricted to say 30 minutes, and you set your arrival time on a cardboard disc. Easy for wardens to ticket anyone with a time set in the future or time expired. Where this system is uded there seems to be little abuse and availbale, convenient short term parking
|
"Incidentally the fine - £50 - was paid a fortnight ago so turned out to be quite expensive bread - nice though !"
Two lots of dough in one day :-).
£50 ???? Now you are telling me something here. If a Police Officer or Traffic Warden (Police controlled) issued a ticket for contravening double yellow lines it would be a standard £30 non endorsable ticket. So why is this £50.
|
Fullchat,
When enforcement is transferred to the local council they set the fines in accordance with government guidelines. Outside of London and a few other big cities the fine is £60, but with a 50% discount (Ie £30) for those that 'fess up and pay promptly. Delay, prevaricate or ignore and the fine can double to £120.
I'm guessing the OP is in London or possibly Brum/Manchester/West Yorks conurbation where a £100 fine applies but he's settled for the "prompt payers discount".
|
Thanks. I must Police a very sheltered area. Daylight robbery!

Spot on . I live in Kent but in a London Borough where the tickets are £100 discounted to £50 for prompt payment.
I could have invested in a bread machine at that money and been quids in all round.

My brother in law, recently on holiday in the UK from Germany, borrowed my car and acquired a Parking Charge Notice as a result of his genuine misinterpretation of the parking regs at a Local Authority sports venue. He was about to pay it and upon perusing the Notice I saw that the vehicle registration number had been incorrectly listed. I advised him not to pay it as my understanding is that the incorrect details rendered the Notice invalid. Three months have now elapsed and to date, being the registered keeper of the vehicle, I have not as yet received any communication either requesting payment or details of the driver. My advice therefore when acquiring a 'ticket' is to carefully scrutinise all of the listed details for any inaccuracies....it could save you unnecessarily parting with your 'hard earned'.
|
I agree that a car parked such that it causes a nuisance should receive a ticket, but in recent years, the number of spaces in towns and cities has dwindled by about 90% for no other reason than for councils to make money from fines and paid parking. That's why, every time my council makes a minor transgression while providing a service to me, I seek a remedy in the small claims court using www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/
|
I've been accused of generalisations in another thread and the above is another example.... "but in recent years, the number of spaces in towns and cities has dwindled by about 90%"... really? I'd say round where I live its stayed about the same... now if you had said compared with the 60s and 70s then I'd have agreed... but the number of cars has gone up considerably since then as well, so inconsiderate parking in those days which may not have caused major problems, now would...
And I still remain to be convinced re the "make money" bit - as far as I'm concerned its the same as the speeding "cashcow" - the remedy is in our own hands, don't park illegally or speed and they wouldn't get any money...
If the parking ticket is given out incorrectly, then I'd agree that you should fight it!
