2000 1.6 EPC / Exhaust System Light - At wits end - nickyh74
Bought my Auto Golf about a year ago but for the majority of that time the car has had the Exhaust System light showing and sometimes also the EPC light. It has been in and out of garages to get this fixed - but after replacing the Lambda sensor, having the Torque Convertor replaced and spending ££££££ the dashboard fault lights are back on and I'm at a loss to know what to do next.

The car seems to drive Ok, but when the EPC light comes on I have to stop and restart the engine to get it out of "Get me home mode"... I've also read the post about the brake light sensor.

I would take this to a small independent, but a couple of months ago the lights came on as I was passing the authorised dealer - so I took it in there and the ecu fault indicated the throttle position sensor to blame. An air intake hose was replaced and the accelerator pedal fault was noted as "sporadic and may return".

The sensor light did return, so I took it back to the Authorised Dealer as I thought it may be the same problem so may be fixed for free. No such joy - this time the Speed Sensor was deemed faulty and needed replacing...!

Anyhow the dashboard fault lights are back on and I'm at a loss to know what to do next - especially when the dealer seems to charge £130+ VAT just to diagnose the fault before anything gets done.

Can anyone help before I drive this unreliable heap thru a showroom window?!!

Thanks

Nick

VW used 9 different 1.6 engines in that year; what's the engine code for yours?

Have you any idea of the actual code numbers found?

It's a Petrol 1.6 SR engine.

As for the code numbers found I don't though an Impulse Sender V06A 906 433 L was replaced last time.

You'll find the 3-letter engine code [beginning with A] on the cam-belt cover label; inside the front of the service book and on the build label stuck to the boot floor.

Ahh yes found it - Looks like AVU.

AVU is fine; 102PS 8-valve used 2000 - '02.

So they found a problem with the accelerator pedal position sensor - but did nothing about it.... and it came back? That must have shocked them?

There is indeed a VSS sensor on these; but if it failed, it would only have a marginal effect on the running and stop the speedo reading.

Without knowing which of the many APP sensor [no TPS on this one] codes that was found; it's difficult to advise further. I'd suggest that you re-try that independent you mentioned and, at least, get all the codes.
