93 1.4 oil in air filter - itsbenny01
hi

just brought an old 1994 1993 {typo corrected} escort 1.4 from ebay drove most of the way home fine then there was random puffs of blue smoke out the back on inspection once i got home i found the breather off at the back of the carb the air filter seems to be full of oil .... is this a major problem or something simple enough to fix or have i been done

the smoke was only now and then one big puff then clouds now n then no change on revs have checked breathers they blow through ok ?? not really sure if that correct its got a twin choke webber on
thanks in advance jas

just seen this would this apply
If the crank was hitting the oil you'd hear it - and the oil froth would be sucked up the breather. You'd be getting periods of loud pinking and a cloud of smoke bigger than the Torrey Canyon. [Now that'll date you...]

Is the engine oil level correct? If it is the crank can't be hitting the oil in the sump. Just XS wear and tear on a 14 year old car I'd say.

If the air filter has a pipe going to the oil breather then thats where it is coming from first stage before you need a new engine.

Looks as though the presence of the Weber might be a clue as to how the engine has been treated...
Andy's right - the motor must be breathing pretty heavily through worn bores, valve guides, etc.

Either that or the crankcase ventilation system bears no relation to the proper Ford one.

hmm quite a few 1.4 came with the weber as standard its an economical carb but will also give extra power if needed so we cant say it been thrashed

just taken off rocker box and the hidden filter inside was caked nothing was really passing cleaned it all up going to test this afternoon

I'd be very surprised if any '94 UK-spec Escort had a carb. They'd moved to fuel-injection a long time before that.

Can 'itsbenny' confirm whether his car is 1993, or 1994?

The header says one thing, but the main post says another.

Probably Weber CFI.

It could have had an old 80's lump dumped in there previous - IIRC the MoT emissions are for the car or engine, whichever's older.

Fuel-injected 1.4s appeared in about 1990, before the Mk4 was phased out. Therefore a change of engine is the only option, though a CFi unit can resemble a carb. to the untrained eye.

I suspect the bores and rings are worn out. It's a common problem. If you take off the rocker cover, you'll probably find thick deposits of black sludge: it was once oil....

I trust it has a current MOT? :-)

sorry my last ford was 94 this is a 93 and its a TWIN choke webber no cat either just a basic 1.4l

seems to be ok now ive cleaned the rocker out time will tell starts on the button as well if rings n bore shot it prob wouldnt start on the button ....

Must be an FUH engine with a Weber TLD carb - and have been built a long time before it was registered. Not too unusual back in the early-nineties recession.

"seems to be ok now ive cleaned the rocker out"

I think if it were mine Benny, i`d be wanting to scrape the sump out and clean the oil screen.
