The brake lights have stopped working, I've checked the bulbs and the fuses and they're ok, is there a switch somewhere I can/should investigate? And suggestions welcome.

The switch is usually located just above the brake pedal, unless it uses a hydraulic pressure switch - that could be anywhere.

Thanx for the idea Peter but I checked there and couldn't see one so as you say, it could be anywhere!

It should be fuse 7 [although they use a lot of different fuse layouts] feeding the bulbs through a pedal position sensor.

How did you check the bulbs? Do you have the means to check if there's a feed to the rear light units?

Hi Screwloose,

My fuses aren't numbered but I checked them all visually. They were all ok.

I also tried switching the fuses (same rating of course) around but everything is working ok.

The 5amp fuse which protects the side light (same bulb) is ok but am I right in guessing there's a different fuse for the brake light circuit?

I have a meter which tells me the feed at the brake light bulb is dead, if I short the feed to the side light across to the brake light circuit the brake light lights ok.

So in conclusion the bulbs are ok, the fuses are ok, the fault must be in this pedal sensor.

So where is the pedal sensor and can I test it?

Thanks for your help so far.

Cliff,
I don't know thw Saxo in detail, but have just had a look at an underbonnet photo on the net and this shows that the brake master cylinder is on the opposite side to the brake pedal. This will be actuated by a cross-shaft inside the car. The brake light switch may be in the passenger footwell, on the end of this cross-shaft assembly.

When you find it, it is easy to test. With the ignition on, there should be 12 volts across the contacts with the brake pedal untouched. When the pedal is depressed enough to operate the switch, this voltage should then fall to zero.

Thanks for the info, the cross bar on my car is in the engine bay, there doesn't appear to be any wires near it anywhere, this is a mystery!

However I did find another fuse box in the engine compartment, I kicked myself, unfortunately all the fuses are intact also.

I'll have another good look later on. What is the web address of the under bonnet picture you found?

Try looking around the top of the pedal below the dashboard.

Well I've managed to track the switch down, it was on top of the brake pedal but I had to remove a piece of trim and contort into a weird shape.

I pulled the connector off of the switch and placed a piece of bent wire into the two terminals with the ignition switch on and hey presto the brake lights worked so it looks like a new switch is in order.

I tried to unscrew the switch from the nut but being covered in grease it's a bit tricky, don't forget the contortions :-), I'm not as nimble as I use to be.

I've had my lunch so I'm popping out again now, thanx for all your help so far.
