There is a quacking type noise coming from a part of the engine that sits under the left hand side of the plastic cover. I think this part has a diafram inside and when the pipe is taken off, the noise stops. It doesn't seem to affect the running of the car and only seems to make the noise when the weather is warm and the car has been running for a while.

Hi

Had a similar issue on my 2001 PD TDI Passat.

Turned out to be the EGR Valve.

At least a couple of other older threads exist somewhere on the forum about this noise and the solution.

Hi

it was a warranty job, IIRC the parts were around £140 on the document I was shown plus whatever it took to fit it, less than an hour I think.

MPG was affected for the worse plus there was a marginal increase in visible smoke when "tanking" it.

Look for the older threads there was more information there.

I had an equally strange noise on my Mondeo that could only be described as a quack. RAC/AA man equally puzzled. It was an EGR valve. The second to go. One stuck open the other stuck closed. Not sure which when it "quacked" but the car came to a halt and would not start again.

So for my Mondeo I broke down (close to home) but inconvenient. Get it booked in ASAP. I thankfully have a company car so got recovered to home quickly and then a hire car late at night with a taxi to take me to get it (all free to me)... and some wonder why we still like company cars ;-) They almost got my local hire place opened at night for me to get a car instead of using the airport.
