I have a 97 MK3 Golf VR6 and have noticed an alarming rear end skittishness when braking from speed or whilst travelling over bumps at speed (eg on a motorway). Anyone else had this problem? Car has done 65.5K

Hmmm. From the braking I would suggest getting your brake bias looked at but this does not suggest skittish-ness at speed.
Get your rear shocks and all bushes checked out. Could be rear strut top mounts or other suspension bush - although 5 years is a little early.
Has this car got a history of heavy loads or lowered suspension?
If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen.

On the subject of MK3 VR6s and off on a slight tangent, mine is making a sighing noise or whine when the auto box changes up at around 35mph. The noise reminds me of a slipping fanbelt, but always happens roughly at this speed and accompanies the gear change. It's been suggested that this is just a side effect of stress releasing from the drive shaft as the revs drop, but I'm not sure.
There are no clunks or delays in changing so I don't think anything serious is imminent but I am curious to know if this is cause for concern or not.
It's a late '94 model with only 54k miles.

Your problem probably is the rear axle bushes which are apparently very prone to failure on the mk3 golf.

The failure of one side or both sides will cause bth the symtoms you speak of. Regards Peter

Thanks for the advice - I've still got to get it sorted, want new suspension as well though - any ideas on a decent setup (not fussed about it being adjustable though)?

I used a weitec suspension on my vr6 , it sits approx 20mm lower and is a super kit. Contact C&R Enterprises in Nottingham.

excellent, thanks. How was the ride quality though? Have you got bigger wheels? I had a lowered MKII on 17's and the ride around town was a tad harsh, so want to try and aovid that if possible.

I have got standard 15" BBS alloys. The ride is fine , comfortable but firm.

I'd go for Bilstein Sport dampers from Euro car parts with some h&r springs. I'd suggest looking at the rear axle bushes too.

I drive an 8 year old Citroen C15D van, and SWMBO uses our "family" car - A Xantia HDi.
We've also run ZX TDs, Pug 306D etc, etc. They're all expected to do a fair mileage to justify their existence.
