02 2.5 Smoky D5 Engine - c5del
My D5 engine is smoking profusely under light engine loads. Been into the Volvo garage. New Turbo hoses have been fitted, the EGR plenum has been cleaned and no fault codes have logged. The road test reported no smoke! Driving home gently at 1500 to 1800rpm and then accelerating produces steady smoke and then a billow as the car accelerates. The smoke is black. Looks like over fuelling. The engine runs very smoothly, mpg is good as ever, performance is slightly down on normal. Only noticed the problem this week and i have run the tank right down, put common rail injector cleaner through and put new fuel in. The air filter has also been changed. All the obvious things! Any ideas where to look next?

Silly one but have you changed the fuel filter for a genuine one?

Very common overlooked.

Today's update. Been into the Volvo dealer. This time they have pressure tested the various hoses and fuel injectors. Turns out the intercooler has been damaged and needs replacing.
I will take a look myself and confirm before I am parted with £430 inc Vat for supply and fit.
I will check the fuel filter as well. I normally try and keep Volvo filters in use even if a local specialist does the work.
