hi, ive got a problem starting my clio 1.2 RN 1998. i was driving it last week when it just died and coasted to a hault. tried to bump while being towed on the way home with no luck.
i asked on another forums and have been doin some checks but now dont know what to do.
i checked the fuel, pump seems fine and there is petrol right up to the injector unit. checked the spark plugs and they seem to be sparking fine, although they are bone dry. so i'm assuming the problems with the injectors.
i checked the voltages at the connector to the injectors, one wire out of the 3 (right most yellow wire) reads around 8-9v when i turn the key.
anyone have any idea what my problem could be? ive heard the CTS and crankshaft sensor can cause problems, with stuttering when started, but my car just wont start!
cheers

You won't get a feed to the injectors unless the engine is actually cranking - or priming the fuel pump, as they are fed by the fuel pump relay. If you have a spark; then the crank sensor is OK.
Broken wires in the engine looms are the most common cause of Clio II electrical maladies. Pay particular attention to the areas under the fusebox and the bend above the clutch.

From the symptoms given of the breakdown.
Have you checked timing belt is intact?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my '02 1.2 16v clio a while back- running perfect then it stopped and dead as a doornail.
I did an internet search and was told it was one of the sensors(can't remeber the name of it- but somebody on here will know) but it had a flat piece of gold metal attached to it- about 2 inches long and 'banana' shaped. It was located somewhere on the right of the engine when you're looking under the bonnet (UK passenger side) and was about half-way down if I remember correctly. I tried to remove it, but it was awkward to get to (and I wasn't convinced I'd be able to get it back on if I needed to) so I ended up giving it a good squirt of WD40 - I tried the engine and it started and I never had the problem again!
hope your story has such a happy ending.
Mike.

If it all died suddenly - check that the valve gear is moving when the engine is cranked - else it may the be cam belt has snapped. Good luck.

thanks for the reples, still avin the problem but! ive checked and cleaned that crankshaft position sensor with no change, the plugs are still sparking but dry and not getting fuel. not really sure what you mean by that last post, not good with mechanical terms, but from just inspectin the engine the belts look fine,
anyone know where i sould go from here?

k just had my dad round, and turns out the cam belts gone. hes done a few cam belts before so were gona replace it ourselves, i found this guide online
www.donkennedy.co.uk/Clio/Clio.htm
Has anyone ever done this before? is there anything we should be aware of? i know the injectors might be gone too.

Highly unlikely that the injectors will be damaged; a few bent valves will be the most likely. You'll soon see once you've got the head off.

back again! does anyone have any information for setting the timing correctly when replacing a snaped cam belt?
|
there are two timings marks, one on the crankshaft (after the pulley is removed,it aligns at roughly 6 o'clock i presume with a mark on the rear timing cover, but possibly on block, it'll be easy to spot) the second is on the camshaft pulley, it's the rectangular one next to the e1-e3 lettering and aligns at roughly 12 o'clock again the corresponding mark is likely on the rear cover. you'll also need a timing pin to fit the flywheel, a suitable replacement is probably easily found such as a drill bit.
having said all that the timing is set at tdc, which you can easily find whilst the head is off to check and repair valve damage (this is an interference engine so you've got pretty much no chance of there being no damage).

anyone know if the head, including valves are the same between a 96 and 98 clio? might be able to get a reconditioned one from a 96 clio.
