04 2.2 puff of diesel smoke on starting - catsdad
My Diesel Accord, which has done about 53k miles has started making a puff of exhaust smoke on starting. It otherwise is running well (MPG over 50mpg of late - amazing compared to some reports) and I use Shell standard fuel. Oil level is fine. Should I wait until next service (several months away) or is this likely to merit early attention?

When you say 'diesel smoke' what colour is it? White = unburnt fuel, blue = oil, possibly worn valve seals/stems, black = overfueling - unlikely at start up.

Thanks, its bluish-grey, so I guess its oil then.

Or on a TDI far more likely oil seapage in turbo bearings, usually not a problem unless it gets really bad. My A4 TDI 140 usually gives a very slight puff of blue smoke on cold start after having been driven long and hard the previous day, and it has less than half of your mileage.
