C1/Aygo/107 - Realistic option - Morpheus
Afternoon BR'ers,

Starting a new job in a few months and my 10 year old Saxo is getting on a bit so I think its time to replace..

I am seriousloy considering the C1 / Aygo / 107 option, but the problem of 1) a bloke 2) 6' 1" 3) "business man" driving what looks a very small car....

Is it a realistic option?

My driving will 90% be just myself in the car, 9% me and girlfriend and 1% maybe 3 / 4 people in total...

To get to work is 13 miles through town, out the other side, couple of single "main road" carridgeway a-roads mostly 30mph / 50mph and a section of national speed limit... and then some windy (how the heck do you spell windy without it sounding like the roads have flatulance?) country roads...

Then I will aproximately once a week have to drive 24 miles from one work site to another on A-roads (not sure of speed limits / how busy).

I'm no brand snob and don't need a car to do 100mph - cheap motoring is more important to me than looking cool (although I have to look respectable for my job), but I am conscious that my Saxo is on the edge of looking silly with me in it....

Help...!

Small cars have come on a long way now and im sure the car would be more than enough for what you want to ask of it.

On the spelling bit, maybe just say 'winding' roads :-)

The Aygo is the most mature looking of the trio i think, having seen one in a dark grey metallic today. Just avoid silly colours and Im sure it will look fine.
Would always advise checking out the other city car options aswell though as there are several talented options out there.

We looked at this trio. 107 doesn't seem that popular and therefore not sure of resale values. The C1 was ok but the cheaper option, but with less equipment. I though the Aygo was the best of the three, with the special edition colour models (blue, black etc) good value in terms of equioment.

In the end we went for a Hyundai i10. I won't go on about how good this car is, but do some research yourself - type the name into google and you will get loads of reviews and 99% of them will be very positive about the i10.

Do bear in mind that the i10 is now available with a 1.2 engine which from what I read is a better option. We changed our order at the weekend to the 1.2.

These are small town cars. I've driven both the Aygo and the C1 and while they are adequate I didn't really like either.

For not a lot more money you can get something like a Daihatsu Sirion or a Mitsubishi Colt and they are much more "grown up" in my opinion. The i10/ Picanto option may be worth investigating too.

I don't think your height will be a problem in any car, but if you go to a dealership it won't take you long to find out for sure.

Sounds reasonable to me. I've driven an Aygo, and didn't like it as much as most people. I found that it had quite a dull ride, poor performance, and poor visibility. Definately very cheap to run though!

I'm not sure what a 'dull ride' is. We have a 5 door Aygo (looks better than 3 door IMHO) in dark metallic grey and we're more than happy with it. It certainly hasn't got 'poor performance' either, although obviously 1litre doesn't give rocketship performance, it'll keep up with any normal traffic. The ride did seem a bit hard at first but we've got used to it. 9 times out of 10 we'll use it rather than our Saab 9-5, just because it's so economical. The Sirion was mentioned above, I'd discount that on looks alone.

Dull probably isn't a very good word actually, but when I went around a corner it felt like it was going to fall over.

Hi Morpheus -

Just a view, but in my experience, ( and don't tell anyone ) no one actually cares what anyone else drives. They only really care what they drive themselves.

The laughable reason why some are self-concious about their choice of car, is because some of them really believe that other people give two hoots what they drive. It's all about some latterday version of keeping up with the Jones's. The irony is that the Jones's are skint but are pretending not to be for the reasons above. Still with me ?

;-)

I should buy what you want if it suits your needs. If the Aygo suits you, go for it. It seems like a good wee car.

Recently had an Aygo as a courtesy car while my own car was being repaired after an accident. I'm 6ft 0ins tall but didn't find headroom a problem. Car was very badly affected by strong crosswinds on dual carriageway, I drove 30 miles each way per day for 3 weeks in it. Mine was a 3 door but I wouldn't really expect to carry more than one other person in it. There is absolutely nothing behind the rear seats, rather disconcerting when you have a tipper lorry about 2 feet behind you.

Very economical, easy to drive, thought the gearbox did take a lot of getting used to. I often ended up in the wrong gear. Instrumentation is very basic, no temperature gauge, and the fuel gauge is liquid crystal.

The small engine has no torque, unlike the much larger car that I'm used to driving. Has to be revved, a bit like a motorbike, to pull away from a standstill.

The drivers seat was very firm, rather small and uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to do a long journey in an Aygo!

We hired a C1 for our summer holiday last year. We flew to Montpellier in France, picked the car up and drove about 100 miles or so down the motorway to L'Escala in Spain.

The car was fine - fun enough to drive and sounds quite sporty (probably the three cylinder engine). Fuel economy was great, even with air-con on all the time and my wife who was 5 months pregnant had no trouble with comfort. It was capable of cruising at French motorway speeds, even up the steep hills as you approach the border.

Th only real limitation is that you have to choose between passengers or luggage - there's not room for four people and bags.

C1 is fine. I'm 6ft+. Its cool now to be seen in a economical car. My C1 is basic 5dr & a weeks commute uses about £12 in fuel. Handling is very good, brakes wicked. performance not bad for 1.0 & you don't need to rev the socks off it!. It will even pull away in 3rd no probs. It has ABS, esp & twin air bags & N cap 4 rated. Power steering & between 60-70mpg. what more could you want. Aygo was dearer & awfull colour choice so I went for cheap & then you don't expect too much.

I had an Aygo 'Blue' as a courtesy car. It was great around town and on normal roads.

Was not good on the motorway, and felt very exposed on M6 in rush hour.

Overall it would have been a great seond car choice except that with 4 kids a four seater is too small.
