Slacken off the handbrake so it has no effect/tension.

Ensure the auto adjusters are working (most likely not) to ensure the footbrake is set correctly. Use a small screwdriver to wind the adjuster round a few clicks at a time until there is just slight drag on the drum. Then, and only then, tighten the handbrake adjuster.

That should work!

if you have changed the rear shoe's did you swap the little washer from the old to the new ?, this is the crucial part for the self adjust mechanism, its on the pin that the lever for the adjuster works on, as all the parts are new (but not drums) have they had enough time to bed in yet or are the drums worn to much ie did they have a lip on the edge

I read it that the drums were new as well.

Depending on what web browser you're using (I'm using IE7) if you hold down the ctrl key when you click on the reply button you will then open up another browser window and still have the the original post in another browser window. Alternately holding down the shift key and clicking on the reply button will open another browser window in older versions of Internet Explorer so you still have the original post to refer back to if necessary.

If you click on the "Reply to this message" of the original topic entry you'll be able to see all of the original text. Similarly for any given reply where all the text is required to be viewed above your "Message:" reply pane.

And it can throw replies out of order within the thread and end up with you replying to the wrong person.

When you say the handbrake is very poor, do you mean the handbrake lever comes up a very long way, and never feels "solid", or, do you mean the handbrake applies at the right point in its travel, but the effort when measured on a brake tester is insufficient to pass an MOT?

sorry i did not get back to you guys , been very busy working on the house , hope you dont think ive been rude , thankyou all for your replies , i sorted the problem in the end.
answer-dont buy cheap parts , the shoes were that nasty , only 10 % of the surface was touching the drum , so i had to draw file them flat !next time i,ll get genuine bits. ive also heard that on the astra the hand brake is not the best anyway , so when fitting new bits they have got to be reasonable quality and extra care is needed on fitting
thanks once again everyone.

answer-dont buy cheap parts ...

At the start of this thread you said "all genuine parts as well" which implies they were branded parts, from a reputable source and therefore not cheap parts.
