2001 1.4 Engine problems - Pappasmurf

Car is a Rover 25 with approx 50k miles on it.Car has developed a misfire in every gear completely at random intervals. It is a friend's car.I had a quick look as I have a limited knowledge and found a hole in the centre section.I patched this with aluminium tape as a temp measure.I also replaced 3 of the spark plugs.Spark plug no.3 (2nd from right under coil pack) gave me a problem and I had to admit defeat. The rubber head of the lead remained around the plug and the rest of the lead came away.Plug no.4 (RHS) had oil around thread and electrode.

The car was put into a local garage today and they have said the head gasket needs replaced. There are a load of questions that I do not have the answers to overheating,milky oil etc but could a head gasket failure cause misfiring?

Should anything else be replaced at the same time?
