Hi all i have a bmw 330 ci with 10000mls on the clock it seems to develop a really annoying squeak at the back when the weather is hot-the more hot the day the worse the squeak! it seems to happen when the car is doing about 20mls per hour but not at faster speeds i had the car serviced at a main bmw dealer and they had the wheels off and they could not see a problem (so i take it its not the brakes)

At only 10k miles, it is highly unlikely to be caused by worn bushes and a broken rear spring (known problem) causes a knock rather than a squeak.
It might seem trivial, but I traced an annoying squeak in my E46 Touring down to the spacesaver spare wheel not tightened down sufficiently. Whilst checking out the boot area, it would also pay to check that all the tools are correctly located in their correct position, as it takes so little to cause a squeak, in what is normally a very quiet car.

i did have a look at these things and they seem to be in order -now the weather has gone colder the squeak has gone again!

Has the spring jumped off it's bottom locating spigot, is running off-centre and rubbing on the top arm? Lowered E46s are known to be allergic to speed bumps.
Very hard to see that it's done it, unless looking from directly underneath when it's on a lift; but child's play to fix.

after haveing the suspension and springs looked at and still no answer it came time to get new back tyers-and the answer to my squeek was-bmw service had not screwed up the wheel bolts properly!! just goes to show you must always check on any work done even if its the dealer!!

Did you get the handbrake checked - seems the 3 series handbrake mechanism can cause problems. My own car squeaks every time i get in and out. Im told its the hanbrake. Although you say yours squeaks while the car is in motion. Pull up the handbrake and give the car a good rocking!!
|
well all i can say is since ive had new back tyres and the bolts put at the correct tourqe no more squeak!!
if it comes back i will try this though.
also good money saving tip, go to your local council depot for your mot-they will only find things wrong with your car if there are any -as they dont do repairs so there is no intrest in them ripping u off!!

Pat
Is yours lowered? See reference above to lowered springs slipping off their pimple. Seen quite a few of them.
Jacking up to change a wheel might alter their position.....

Screwloose,
No, my car is not lowered (standard sports susp) - only squeaks when handbrake is engaged and when i subsequently enter/exit the car.
Just didnt get around to gettin it sorted yet.
