2001 1.6 ABS sensor missing! - telecaster
While fitting brake pads to said car I noticed there was only one abs sensor fitted.....would this be the cause of the ABS dash light showing?

Ta in advance

Marty.

Marty

Do you mean one ABS sensor - or one pad-wear sensor? There's an ABS sensor on every wheel-bearing.
2001 1.6 abs sensor missing! - telecaster
ABS sensor , its a black wire coming from the hub to a white twin pin connector coming down through the wheel arch.......no sign of any electrical connections to the pads.
2001 1.6 abs sensor missing! - Screwloose

What's the context of this? ABS needs constant wheel-speed info from all the wheels to function - has one been removed for some reason?
2001 1.6 abs sensor missing! - telecaster
Yes Screwloose....passenger front wheel sensor is missing......also noticed there is no mounting point on the hub, which drivers side has?????????

Cheers for help so far.

Has it actually got an ABS actuator block fitted? Is this a UK-spec car?

According to my March 1999 and September 2002 brochures ABS wasn't fitted to 1.6 variants. Exactly what model is yours, and does it have rear disc brakes? ABS wasn't fitted to the Focus (of that era anyway) with rear drum brakes.

Thanks guys...model in question is 2001 Ford focus 1.6i Ghia with the ztec engine.

Rear brakes are drums and seem to have the sensors fitted also.

So there seems to be 3 wheels with abs sensors fitted and one minus ...tho the connector is there for it.

I am hoping that buying a new sensor and fitting it to the missing wheel will solve my problem as mot is due.

Will try post a pic sometime today andmaybe someone can verify that car is fitted with abs wheel sensors.

A friend of mine has a 1985 Audi ur-Quattro (drool) which was bought with the ABS light on. The dealer pleaded ignorance, and as it was otherwise a beautiful, straight example, with a huge, traceable owners club history, he took the plunge (minus a discount)

This was exactly the cause of his problem - one ABS sensor was missing. A replacement was fitted, the light went out, and has been fine ever since.

Cheers

So; what is the context?? How long have you had it? When did the ABS light come on?

Who fitted the wrong - non-ABS - secondhand front leg and left the sensor off? Why did it need a new leg - crash damage?

Just fitting a sensor won't work [even if there's a hole] the bearing is different on an ABS one.

"ABS wasn't fitted to the Focus (of that era anyway) with rear drum brakes"

I replaced the rear hub/drum bearings on my Mk1 Focus recently. Mine doesn't have ABS fitted, however the Haynes Manual for the 1998-2001 Focus states "Remove the ABS sensor ring from the hub/drum assembly (where fitted)" which suggests that ABS with rear drums was possible.

Conclusion...from research on the net it seems the focus instrument panel gives a lot of troubl with failing lights, speedo stopping etc.

One suggested solution was to remove instrument cluster and clean with electrical switch cleaner and allow dry.

This I have done and abs light has gone out!

Alls well that ends well (I hope).

Have you checked to see if it's grown a new sensor? ABS can't function without 4 speed inputs.

[And to save the snide comment from the usual source ; yes, I know that MkIII Escorts only had ABS on the front.]

The juvenile comment was uncalled for .

Front only Escort ABS was a mechanical system not electronic.

on the subject, while checking out my brakes at the weekend, i noticed that the metal clip holding the pad to the caliper was missing on the drivers side on my Fiesta mk4!!
wondered why there was a clanking when braking in reverse!!
2001 1.6 abs sensor missing! - Screwloose

Not only juvenile - deliberately sarcastic. There was clearly a lot more going on here than was being revealed. Despite repeated requests for the context in which this sensor disappeared; none was forthcoming.

To suggest that an ABS system would do a self-test and happily put the light out with one of it's sensors still missing is laughable.

And sarcasm is the lowest form of wit !

In some respects I can understand Screwloose's frustration when trying to help someone, but doesn't get the necessary feedback required to help further. Screwloose was trying to be helpful, but replies to his questions weren't forthcoming.

Without opening a can of worms again, I myself am trying to figure out whether one sensor was actually missing, (which led you to believe that was the original fault) but then removing the instrument cluster & cleaning the contacts solved the problem. Was the sensor missing or not? If not, then how come it was overlooked when you spotted the other sensors?

{I was going to edit this into my other post, but I see you had replied to it before I had the chance to, hence posting it here instead}

Cheers dave, maybe I am not as articulate as some explaining things , but problem is solved and and I hold no ill feeling to screw.

How can it be fixed. You have three sensors fitted so clearly ABS is fitted and you have not identified if you have an ABS pump block in the system. Just because you got the light to go it is not the solution, that could be an issue or reconnection. If you car has ABS then it will fail the MOT and you may be driving at risk. Your car has either had a leg changed or has had an accident and a bodge leg has been fitted. Ring Ford with the VIN and have the fitted system ID'd. Do not stick your head in the sand. Regards Peter
