On the A414 from M1 J8 into Hemel Hempstead there is a normal Gatso. They have just installed a CCTV camera about 10 metres down the road from the Gatso, pointing the same way but angled down at the road. Any ideas what it is? It isna't a security camera for the Gatso as it has been angled to point away from it, at the road.

Is it to catch people mooning at the speed camera?
|
Actually I've seena speed camera on the A40 just between hangar lane and acton eastbound with a CCTV camera on top pointing towards traffic - is that to catch people slowing down just before the cameras?
And also, what's with people whizzing through SPECS on the M1 between J1-3 without a care in the world?

It sounds very much like one that erected in Colchester 2 or 3 years ago. It is on a single carriageway road and has 2 cameras mounted on the post. Each pointing downward and in opposite directions. They are not speed cameras, allegedly, but do record vehicle number plate and time. They are all over the country and are used to track vehicle movements. What would happen if you passed the one in Colchester at say 11.00 and passed the one in Hemel, about 100 miles away at 12.00 is anyone's guess. Big brother in the name of national security !!

If these are the dark blue ones, I think they are to provide congestion warnings for Roadwatch or Trafficmaster subscribers, so a commercial operation, not Big Brother as such.

Yes. I know of the traffic master cameras. These are different. There was an article about them in the local rag and that is source for my comment.

There are similar cameras at traffic choke points near here (road bridges over Forth and Tay), and on all acess roads to Edinburgh airport. Probably one of the big brother organisations ANPR systems.

Could it be to help area traffic controllers ?
|
There is a Truvelo (spelling?) in Maidstone that has just gone up on a corner. Its painted grey.
Is this allowed? I thought that they had to be yellow?

Why is it that there are some speed cameras which haven?t been painted yellow?
Cameras which have not been painted yellow are operated by the Police enforcement unit and are not operated by the safety camera partnership. They do not form part of the national safety camera scheme and fine revenue can not be hypothecated.
