1995 2.0 dust in fuel tank - kelvin from Oz
I bought my daughter a 95 2lt 306 petrol here in Australia and shorlty after buying it my son took it to "grass" motokana which was more dust than grass. After about 20 minutes of competing in the dust the thing refused to run over idle, then died. A dead fuel pump and "mud and excrement " in the tank was diagnosed. $450 later we were on the way with a new pump, and thought it was just bad luck and dodgy petrol.
Four months later my son was back at the Motokana with his sisters car again, (the full house MK11 escort I bought him is not the right machine for something like Motokana's). However 20 minutes into the comtetition the thing died again. Once again investigation showed a another dead $450 fuel pump and a tank full of mud.
The machanic assures me he could not find any loose seals or cracked filler tubes etc.
Can anyone give me any advice on how the dust is geting into the tank as this is annoying me.
thanks

How does the air(muck?) get into the tank to replace the used fuel?

Via the breather in the fuel filler cap perhaps. Air will go into the tank to replace the fuel used and it takes dust with it. Just a thought. I've no experience or proof of this.

It's an oldish car, and perhaps the crud of age in the fuel tank is being disturbed by the violent movements on the grass track.

The tank was cleaned comprehensivly after the first pump died. I must admit that I have since been informed that the Peugeot pumps are heaps more sensitive to dust/grit than most, and that Australia, because its so geologically old, has some of the finest dust going, and able top get through any filter.
