I'm sure it is an isolated case, but I've jus approved repairs to a 54reg Vivaro of ours that needs a new engine - £3K worth of recon engine and turbo.....
Before that, they seemed to be a good van!

Rebault, Vauxhall & Nissan all do the same vans with different badges & modestly different specs
If that is the van you need / want try all three to see which is the cheapest

A friend has one supplied by his employer on an 06 plate (1.9 CDTi LWB) and has just clicked over 100,000 miles. Has only needed a wheel bearing and a replacement radio unit outside of normal servicing and consumables. The gearbox is notchy into 2nd on cold oil, but has been like it pretty much from new and has never got any worse.
I've driven it - it goes well and is very comfy. His firm replaced a fleet of Sprinters with these, and reckon the Vauxhalls are more reliable and better put together. I've only heard that third hand though.
Cheers

Our Vivaro ? 2005 (05) 1.9 CDTI Long (higher output of the 2 available at the time ? 115bhp I think) has now done about 78k.
I have had a lot of trouble with it over the last six months.
Up to about 68k the van was fantastic. Fast, economical (six speed box, around 45mpg unloaded), comfortable, easy to drive, interior well screwed together and a great payload.
Thin it started using (or losing) vast amounts of oil. Had turbo, intercooler and various other parts replaced over a period of 4 -5 months.
Now, I understand that things can and do go wrong but my whole experience with Vauxhall dealers has probably ensured that I don?t buy another Vauxhall.
The van is now out of warranty and is in the garage again with an engine management fault. I also suspect either the master or slave clutch cylinder is on its way out.
Would I recommend one? Yes, it?s a great van when working and if you have a capable dealer at hand that can sort any problems fast, all the better. Or look at the Renault / Nissan versions if you know of any good local dealers.

I don't believe these vans have the best of reputations - certainly our electricians needed a new turbo on his at circa 30k.

I have had 2 of these vans and put 100k+ on the clock with both. The first was an 03 plate dti - the only fault I had with this was a bearing go in the gearbox at about 95k (fixed under warrantee in 3 days). The second is a 55 plate cdti. The only fault I have had with this was a faulty afm when it was 2 days old. It has not missed a beat since and I am just about to order a new one to replace it. I must admit that the dealer who services the van is briliant. I damaged a fuel pipe (by driving through a deep puddle to quick) and got to the dealer at 4pm - it was fixed and ready fro me to drive it away at 10am the next morning. Ammazing what a bottle of whisky for the lads in the workshop can do!

Hi SuperBuyer hope you dont mind me asking but why did you have to replace the engine?
I'm sure it is an isolated case but I've jus approved repairs to a 54reg Vivaro of ours that needs a new engine - £3K worth of recon engine and turbo..... Before that they seemed to be a good van!

I have the Nissan Primastar.
On the whole it's OK, though some of you will remember the issues I had with the Turbo at 4 years old. The turbo and intercooler both needed replacing. I ended up paying 25% of the main dealer cost at just under £600.
I would have one again, I suspect I was unlucky with the turbo. I decided not to take out their offer of a further 3 year warranty from year 4 to 6 for around £600. I must admit, I wished I'd taken it. I could have afforded it.
Having said that it always starts without a problem. I've only done some 24k in mine

Own a Long wheelbase Renault Master since new in 02. Done nearly 100k loaded. Would have another tomorrow. Niggles like all vehicles. Dealers CRAP. Bunch of prevaricating **** pots. Great engine.

We've got the standard DTI with 5 speed box.No trouble and its on an 04 plate.I have heard lots of horror stories about the higher power CDTI with the 6 speed box with the owners having new gearboxes. No trouble heard about the 5 speed so i'd stick to that one.
If you get any engine management lights coming on,the vans are renowned for plugs and sockets coming undone. For example if the airbag light comes on check under the passenger seat for loose connections. If you push things under the seat you can catch the plug and socket and they come apart hence bringing on the airbag light.Easy fix though!!

its not a sprinter
what more is there to say

Ive got a 54 plate lwb vivaro 5 speed cdti its done 197.000 ive done over 100.000 of them outside normal servicing i have only ever replaced rear wheel bearings. No gearbox issues at all. (5speed)
Would recomend the 5 speed model over the 6 speed. I had a 6 speed last year and had terrible trouble with the gearbox...although the mpg is bettter you will pay for it in the long run with a new/ recon box....
Happy motoring

Doesn't this van need the engine out to replace the clutch ?
Only 2 vans worth having, in my view : Sprinters and Transits

Reading this thread gives me vertigo. Just last week helped daughter buy 54 plate, 98000 mile Vivaro. Is it possible to filter out all the bad posts and just keep the good ones before I show her how clever I am or should I just hide the laptop.Cheers Colin S
