I've got a 2000 B5 Passat and had to take the dash out to replace the heater matrix. It's not difficult but it is a long job - took me the best part of a week though I'm fairly careful. The Haynes manual covers it.

We had an 01 Passat which did that. We ended up selling it due to that and other niggles. We bought a Rover 75 after which has been absolutely faultless for the 4 years we've had it... (strange I know)

I used to know a 56 reg passat that did that. It went in for some other work and VW had the dash out and in again at the same time to cure the creak. It worked.

My 2002 model did this also from new. Great car otherwise.
Dealer fix under warrany would have involved removal of the dash which I just didn't fancy on a new car. I shoved a sock between the dash and the screen to reduce it as it drove me mad but it still persisted albeit not as bad.
The dashboard is simply too big and heavy.

My 2001 B5.5 Passat emitted not the slightest creak and I had it for 110,000 miles.
My new Hyundai Coupe is emitting some noise from the boot area but not too annoying- as yet.
