I?m already pre-occupied on the RTB household motoring solutions for 18 months hence. I suspect that many other BRs are in a similar frame of mind half the time so I thought I?d record my current thoughts and see how these change and develop over the next 18 months.
We run two cars. SWMBO has a 2005 Grand Scenic and I run a 2002 52 Mondeo. The Scenic is used mainly for my wife?s business and school runs. It doubles as the family car on those increasingly rare occasions when all 5 of us go out together. The Scenic is leased on a good deal including maintenance, but I doubt that we will get close to the 48k allowed by the lease over the lease which is up in September 2009. The Mondeo is owned and has just reached 70k meaning I?ve clocked up some 40k in the 30 months that I?ve been running it. To my surprise, I quite like the Mondeo. It handles well and goes OK although you would never find yourself popping out of the house just to admire it in the driveway.
Suspect that budget between the 2 cars will be around £14k so quite a lot of scope. SWMBO ideally needs a people carrier for her business which is good as it leaves me with the opportunity to go a smaller ?fun car?. So she could have a CMax or Zafira and I could have a warmish hatch, perhaps. My likes include the Leon FR or more radically a last generation Celica or a late Pug 406 coupe. Perhaps even a MX5, but is suspect I might fall out of love with it on the M5 commute. Dream car is still the A4 convertible which is out of the question ? but I would n?t mind a convertible ?.. Saab 93 perhaps?
Then SWMBO says she would really like a Micra. She had a 99T Micra, which she loved, and has tried a more recent one. Of course, that would leave me needing to run the family car which leaves me considering a Legacy Tourer perhaps. Others that I like include the Mazda 6 and the ?. Erm, well I?m not sure.
Of course, RTB junior is 17 in 18 months time. I should be considering a visit to the auctions to pick up a suitable learner/first car. (Note to self ? does Joe Dowd bother with £1,000 motors?)
Much to ponder. Sigh.

Never heard of a model called a Blog...:-)
It must be difficult balancing the transport needs of parents with their family and work life - at least you have some time to ponder on the eventual outcome.

::eyes pop::
::smoke drifts out of top of head::
::confused::
I sometimes think that it would be nice to run a MK ii Jaguar. But then I remember it would have to be parked on the streets, come rain come snow.
I have never replaced a car that hasn't gone to the scrapyard/been beyond economic repair IMO. I guess I have a few ideas of how I would spend £500 to replace my Vectra when the cambelt snaps, but until it does £500 buys a nice suit or a couple of pairs of shoes, or dinner out five times.

SWMBO- She Who Must Be Obeyed- or- "The Wife".

Surely private cars will be illegal by then?

Well bintang, not quite 18 months since your post but looks as if they are still going to be legal!
Amused by my earlier musings and am pleased to provide an update having purchased a 4 year old Honda CRV this week. Wouldn't have envisaged that back in March 08.
Why a CRV? Well SWMBO is going to get the smaller car (still maybe a Micra) which will also serve as a learner for rising 17yo lad. That left me needing to find a family machine for myself. After much contemplation the idea of a soft roader grew on me. I didn't want another Scenic type machine or a bog standard hatch/estate. Then there was the episode getting lost in the steep, oh so steep, hills above the Exe trying to locate a birthday party location ....
Hard finding what I wanted, but eventually found one at a Honda dealer in Kent and the deal was done with the dealer taking the reliable but fading Mondy in part ex.
