Help me make sense of the range - guygamps
Hi...

I might be looking for a "hot" or "very warm" hatch, and apart from the Golf GTI, the Renault Megane would be a strong contender. But there are SO many models, can anyone help me make sense of them, preferably comments from people who own any of the following...

So.... warm/hot diesel versions are listed as

Tech Run dCi 130 6 speed
Tech Run dCi 130 FAP Auto
GT DCi 150
Renaultsport dCi 175
Renaultsport dCi 175 Lux

petrol versions are listed as as

GT 2.0 Turbo 165
Renaultsport 225 Cup
Renaultsport 230 Renault F1 Team R26
Renaultsport 225 Lux

So what are my priorities (help point me to the best version for me).

Nice interior - black leather - and a modicum of toys - CD changer and Climate Control

Smooth ride - more GT than hardcore sports - lots of potholes and speed bumps here, and I sold a Hyundai V6 Coupe cos the suspension was too hard.

Good mid-range acceleration - currently drive a pug 406 Coupe 3.0 V6 Auto, and the acceleration is useless until you get to close 4000RPM, this means I am always changing down on the auto box. Even my Bora 1.9TDi tiptronic auto I had a few years ago felt more lively. Since it had 130bhp, I have listed anything with 130bhp or up above.

Safety - I would want traction control (I spun off in the wet driving a 200SX turbo) and possibly even 4 wheel drive.

Note the above are my priorities, but NOT in order of priority, just things I know matter to me. the 200SX had 200BHP and felt wonderful (until the back end lost it). I certainly wouldn't want more, but also realise that the mid-range performance was most important not absolute top speeds etc. 20 - 50 acceleration , or 30 - 70 being where it counts.

Can't even decide diesel/petrol, but probably would prefer petrol. Diesel is attractive due to the mid range shove I know is typical of a turbo diesel.

Thoughts?

Not a lot of help for you but just to say that there is no four wheel drive version, all front wheel drive. The top of the range 225 Renault sport version has a LSD that makes the handling less prone to hedge incursion

Not sure that I would buy one but on that brief, GT dCi 150.

Cheap, from a broker (~£13k) - vastly more so than a Golf GTi, good power, decent looks and good spec but not a nutter car like the Renaultsport.

No 4WD but there's not much that will go backwards into a hedge with less provocation than a 200SX.

If you go for the 225 Sport version, it is a VERY swift car. Masses of mid range and very easy to get the traction control to kick in.

I found it a nice car to drive for a short while but the ride was too firm and the interior too plastiky for me.

Good Luck.

I own a 175 Dci lux and to be honest its better than the golf I have as a company car. it is incredibly quick when excelerating from 30miles an hour upwards and corners brilliantly.

The suspention although hard is livable and feels smooth when traveling on motorways...

A word of warning though.. Dont get the DCI version unless you do quite a high milage. if you do lots of short runs the particlate filter never get up to full working tempreture and can clog. Salesmen are unlikely to tell tell you this!

But if like me you clock up the miles on a daily basis it makes real sence. There are big reductions 2 if you are prepared to walk away a few times.
