1. Min thickness for front brake disks (98 Laguna 1.6RT - vented) . where can I find such information - there doesn\'t seem to be a Haynes manual for this.
2. Showroom has been somewhat enthusiastic with polish, leaving a lot white deposits on the black trim. How do you remove it?
Any advice welcome..

J,
I think the official figure for the minimum pad thickness is 6mm. This seems a little high but I guess it allows for them wearing down by the next service. As a rule if they are bad enough to look like they need measuring they are ready to change.
Polish on black textured plastic is a pig. I use a nailbrush and washing up liquid (for the added salt you know) then one of the better back-to-black products.

IIRC minimum pad thickness can be quoted in two ways. Sometimes it is including the metal backing (as it's easier to measure total thickness), and sometimes it is just for the friction material. If it is 6mm including the backing, this would leave the friction material at 2.5/3mm, which seems about right for a change. Otherwise, as you say, at 6mm friction material you'd be changing the pads very early. Alternatively, this gives a long remaining service life and is a consequence of long service intervals. What do you think?

John,
Quite, you expand on the feeling I was trying to convey. The figure given of 6mm seemed too great if just the friction material and perhaps a little slim if it includes the metal backing. However I have just double checked and it did include the backing. That seems logical as it compares with the Xantia that has a friction material only minimum thickness of 2-3mm.
More important is when should the figure be used. Is it a figure to be regarded as a minimum at any point in time or a minimum at a service when the next may not be for another year?
Most folks regard it as a nuisance to book a brake pad change between dealer/garage services so you have to make a best judgement at service time. I find this only really possible after I've seen a particular car/customer combination over a service interval to know the likely wear rate.
Thanks for prompting me to check these figures and get them clarified.

David, et al.
All good info, but the question was about disc thickness, not pad thickness!

Brian,
Thanks for that. It's damm hard looking at the PC and waving the flag out of our front window all day. One task at a time...one task at a time!
Min disc thickness is 19.8mm at the front.

David - thanks for that, yes it was the disk thickness I was after not the pad. My last three cars all had wear indicators in the pads, not much use as the wires snapped in every case...

I use silicon liquid to remove the polish.

Brake disc minimum thickness is usually marked ont he outer edge of a new brake disc.....which isn't much use 20K down the road!
I would expect a Renault dealer to have the required info, try one!

Silicon liquid?
Is that the watery white stuff that smells of a gentlemens urinal? (or is that liquid latex?) Where would you acquire such a thing?
