HELP!
Hi, guys. I've got a year 2000 BMW 320d. The car has done 150k on the clock and at present I am experiencing very little power. It drives absolutely fine in the low rev. I can really fell turbo kicks in and suddenly a really rather large surge of power from 1600 rpm to 2200rpm. After then, only very slight acceleration can be felt even if the car still picks up.
Can anyone find me a solution please? Thanks

Does the engine management light ever come on? When did this start happening? Anything done on the car around that time?
Has anyone looked at it? What did they try?
|
I've bought this car from auction and have not had anyone looked at it yet. There is no waring light on at all.

I'd suggest that you get it looked at by a diesel specialist. There are many possible causes of this fault and you don't want to guess wrongly at BM prices.
|
Where are you in the UK ? I know a couple of very good BMW indies.
|
|
Sounds like the air mass meter. I had loss of power on my 2000 320d and boy was I glad I changed the air mass!
|
I've had it checked by my mate's X431 and it shows a fault code of "glow plug fault". Any idea if that could cause loss of power??!!
|
No; it might cause a starting issue, but glow-plugs have no effect on power.
As you've got access to a Launch [doubtless loaded with unlicensed BMW software...] you should be able to view the airflow readings and the boost pressures. Are they in agreement with the desired [target] readings?
There are many things that could cause this; MAF; blocked cat; lift pump; split turbo/intercooler hose; fuel filter; pump... All sorts.

Hello there, i'm joining the club. Same problem with my BMW 320D, i was for a quick test to a BMW specialist ( P.C.S. MILTON KEYNES ) and they said the problem is the AIR FLOW ( MASS ) METER. Called the seller of the car ( i've got 3 months warranty when i bought it ) & they will change it for it. When? I don't know! What a pain! Called BMW for a quote - £240.43 only for the part. It seems like there is no escape. In my opinion will be much better to buy a brand new genuine part, and not refurbished or other crap. I'll keep in touch. Regards. P.S. Nice forum guys !

There are loads of these for sale on ebay or German & Swedish car parts, you dont have to pay BMW prices. Air mass sensors are not manufacturer specific, most of the German manufacturers use the same pool of OEM parts ie Bosch or Pierburg.
|
Unfortunately; most of the ones on e-bay and from non-dealer sources are counterfeit and haven't been anywhere near a Bosch factory.
The only safe source for a MAF now is the dealers. I'm fed up with changing "It's a Genuine Bosch" MAF that doesn't work properly.

Hi, i have some news - yesterday they changed the Air Flow Meter on my BMW 320D and... oh boy, much much much better now, i have power. No more smoke when the engine starts. They paid arround £200 for the part ( after discount ). Thankfully the car was under warranty! I'll keep an eye on the fuel consumption. I'm thinking now for an ECU Remap, can get 185BHP from 136BHP - any thoughts, advices? Kind regards.

Yes this problem is usually a failing MAF sensor (Air mass meter) quite a common problem on all modern turbo diesels.
www.bmwland.co.uk documents these problem extensively.

Not a completely true statement. Euro Car parts supply genuine as-fitted parts as well as equivalents, and most European diesel cars anyway use the same MAF sensor or one of a huandfull of parts from either Pierburg or Bosch, dont be too pulled in by the main dealer propaganda, cus they need someone to finance their next set of diamond cufflinks !
Still glad you got it all working okay.

"Main dealer propagada?" What do you think I do for a living?

Looking for some help
I bought a 320tb few weeks ago with a 12 month mot
The car was working perfect but all of a sudden it has gone into limp mode!
The car looses power now and again ( can still hear the turbo kicking in)
It seems to take a long time to gain power and speed especially on a Hill
It has been plugged into a diagnostic machine but no faults were found any idea what this could be?
May I add that the car had no water in it and I didn’t realise till around 3 days ago it was bone dry
