was just getting over the excitement and shock of my P reg toyota passing its MOT when i noticed a ticking sound, called out the AA who couldnt figure out what it was but the guy said the clutch seemed to be going, he said id find it more and more difficult to get into gear, which i am now doing, can anyone tell me a) how long before itll eventually go (approx) being a mere female lone parent on a low-ish income i dont want to get it done till it really needs it. also how much is it likely to set me back? will i also need a new gearbox? its christmas so go easy please, no heartattacks! :) also if anyone could recommend a good garage pref in the north london area, had my brakes done at quikfit a few months ago and found them extortionate so would prefer to avoid there

If it's the clutch you won't near a new gearbox...but I would imagine the gearbox won't like being used with a dodgy clutch. I think it really needs it at this stage if it is starting to cause gear selection problems.

am surprised the moderators didn't pounce and remove the extortionate garage's name ?

I use a garage in NW10 , they have always been fair with me - can supply details provided the moderators won't have a seizure . There is also a clutch centre in Staples Corner , haven't used them myself , just seen their sign on a bridge there . You're better off phoning a few and getting quotes before traipsing around . Am sure you need a three part kit for a good job . If they sound like idiots , don't bother .

Also , and this sounds sexist , but evidence suggests men are less likely to get ripped off , so maybe ask someone to call for you ?

I would agree.
I know what you are referring to but sarah278 will not, judging by her first posting.
The three parts are often referred to a 1. Clutch disk, 2. Pressure plate and 3. release (or thrust) bearing.

How is sarah to determine this?
so maybe ask someone to call for you ?

I think this is an excellent suggestion especially if they have idea of what is required.

She doesn't have to be a trained mechanic to ascertain whether her interlocutor is an idiot or chancer . Generally, if they fail to address you at your level , fob off with generic answers , or fail to call back if they can't field the original query at the time , then they should be skipped .

As squeezed motorists trying to wisely spend their hard - earned , it is up to all of us to ensure we enter a situation with eyes wide open. Anything less is a blank cheque . Who hasn't booked their car in thinking it'll be a £250 job when the final bill at 5.30 pm on a Friday was £550 ?? the garage anticipate your incredulity and have their answers ready. I have many years of car ownership behind and hopefully ahead of me , and if I can help somebody else avoid being ripped off , then I will every time .

im aware of the general tendency of a lot of garages to assume women are idiots when it comes to cars, im no mechanic but have basic knowledge of the ins and outs, am general quite savvy overall as well but no intricate knowledge of parts/labour/costs. ive got a garage near me who are excellent, the guy is a gem, has never ripped me off, reckon my mot got through by a hair's bredth but hes busy as hell so dont want to burden him, im nearer the enfield end of london so dont want to go too far afield, am just curious to know a ballpark figure for a toyota clutch, what am i looking at in terms of labour? appreciate all advice given though, thanks!

I think you may have answered your own question here. Your local garage is excellent, the mechanic is a gem and you've never been ripped you off and they are very busy.......seriously why would you go anywhere else?!? Get a quote from them and compare to some others, even if they are slightly more expensive they still may be the best bet given your existing client relationship with them

Cheers
