Warranty for BMW - CMP
Hi,

I purchased a BMW 320d from a BMW main dealer last year and the 1 year warranty that came with the Car is running out shortly. The Car is approaching 4 years old and has done 27000 miles.

Can anyone recommend any third party warranty cover providers? and are there any specific areas of the Car that I should be looking for to be covered?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thanks DD.

I can confirm that Warranty Direct is very good. Not connected to it in anyway, a family member used it on a five year old Ford. They coughed up no problem with the garage doing all the negotiation on her behalf. They turned the claim around in something like three working days. The claims process was very simple (once the garage are on board) - make sure (certainly with the BMW) that you go for the Gold package and opt for franchised Servicing package (this covers you for up to 80 pounds per hour labour). She asked me to help her make sense of the small print, which was dead simple and straightforward. The claim form was also in Plain English and easy to achieve completion without going through too many hoops.

The turbo on the 320d is a weak spot and not a cheap thing to replace.

Thanks for your comments Pugugly and blue haddock!

It's not very cheap though - when I got a quote last year for the Gold package on my (at the time) Jaguar, it was about £1200 per year, which even at main dealer rates is quite a lot of repair work. I didn't bother, and saved the money!

Thanks Dipstick I'll let everyone know how much they quote...hopefully less than £1200!

WD are negotiable to some degree over the price, get a quote and they will ring you after a while and if you are unhappy with the price they will make it more competitive. As has been said the 320d 2001-2003 are prone to turbo failures, and according to several BMW forums the intake manifolds can fail and shed their swirl flaps into the engine causing major damage, so it is worth checking the manifold is covered, for instance by taking taking out WD's additional 'Emissions and Airbag Cover.'

To give you an idea of prices, I recently took out their Extracare cover with the optional Emissions and Airbag cover for a 57,000 mile 2002 320d SE, the cost for 13 months was £244, max claim limit £5000, max labour rate £50 per hour. If you wanted to have cover for a main dealer to fix the car, that will probably be closer to £300 (may be less as your car is such low mileage)

Thanks Ian, great advice.
