Believe me - this is the way it is in Johannesburg!
Wonder what it's like in Cape Town: (hello Ian!)

We've been going to Cape Town every year since 1999 and it would be interesting to hear Ian's view. I can only say that touch wood we've never felt threatened or unsafe, and there are some inner-city areas of the UK that I'd say are less safe than Cape Town, although I agree safer than Jo'burg.

Wonder what it's like in Cape Town: >>
I have not found any problems in CPT ( in any of my many many holidays with SWMBO & 2 x kids). Just sorting out another independant holiday there next year and taking another couple of friends to show them around.
I am cautious but never been aware of any dodgy situations.
I have never used public transport or taxis.
I have never hired anything bigger/ flash than a Scenic or Camry that is rented at the airport and returned there.
I stick to the main roads and keep the tank well topped up.
I have only been stopped twice - both times by traffic police on routine checks.
I avoid a few areas like the Cape Flats and the Mitchell's Plains area.
Apart from my very first two holidays I rent a flat or a house that is in a good area.
So I think it is a super holiday location and all the photos I have seen in travel progs /brochures are accurate. I have stayed in flats that have since been in several TV documentaries and are in brochures.
I am just concerned that the football "event" will screw things up especially giving many more Brits a taste of CPT and they will go again.

I have just returned from a short trip to East London, and whilst the advice given is good common sense sort of stuff it paints a very bad picture. Yes I was aware of this sort of information before I went and as a result always travelled with my belongings out of sight locked in the boot, but really never saw anything that caused me any concerns... even when travelling alongside one of the biggest shanty town / townships or whatever they are called.
Keep a level head and you will be fine, S.Africa was a very pleasent surprise for me.
I rented a VW Chica or what ever they call the MKI / MkII golf that they still make there. Was most amused by it, but probably would rent something more solid the next time.

Oh yeah, and they call traffic lights 'Robots' which is confusing when being given directions...
Avis girl: "drive on past 4 sets of robots..."
Puzzeled Vern: "Excuse me???" :o)
Also they drive on the proper side of the road out there which is nice.
