got a 01 Saxo vtr ( 8 valve), cam belt was changed 35k ago, just cleaned the cover for it, and noticed there is some play in the belt, not across the top pulley,
but from the top pulley to the bottom one, where the belt is facing the front of the car, there 15/20mm or so of free movement, that ok?
flaps a bit, engine was cold, car has done 84k
now am i right in saying, that only part of the belt is under tension?!
should i worry?

Isn't the tensioner on the other side of the belt, it sounds ok remember too tight it would snap you need some free play.
|
as the actor used to say " a finger and thumb is just enough to give the car a treat" (words moved about to protect the guilty)
so yes sounds alright to me (famous last words as your stuck on the A1)

The normal test for cambelts is that you should *just* be able to turn it through 90° in the middle of the longest run. Try this on yours - 20mm sounds a bit loose to me - especially if it's flapping when running.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Quarter turn on longest run is about right;the amount of play you quote would be OK for an alternator V belt but not for a cambelt.
|
can turn it more then 90dg! bah!

Fit a new belt and all the trimmings. Do NOT attempt to tighten it.

yes indeed! parts ordered! belt kit and water pump! thanks to all!
