In Chile I have a Dodge Ram (its a pick-up).

I now need (well, want) to import this to the UK.

Can someone give me a starting point ?

Its not the actual importing, its how I get it registered and on the road in the UK once its there. What actually needs to be done to the thing. It has a Cat, so that at least should be ok.

Also, can someone recommend an insurer for American Cars. I´m old, so I am not expecting it to be too big a problem.

The Government website www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/vehicles.htm is actually quite helpful.

Mark,

I looked into this for importing my Outback from Oz to the UK....the finances prevented me doing this but the procedure has changed in the last 3-4 years.

All private imports of used cars from outside the EU (ie no CoC paperwork) must have a single vehicle approval test, there are a few companies which specialise in doing this and the paperwork
(I cant remember the names right now but their www pages were very helpful.)

A few comments, speedos must now be primarily in mph, frequencies of radio remotes are checked, diameters of filler tubes etc. NB speedo changes from km/h to mph is usually a chip change plus a transfer to show that the displayed numbers are now mph and not km/h.

All of the above was fairly straight forward for the Subaru as an almost identical model is sold in the UK, however the real sting was for the insurance...it would have shown on the docs as an import and not EXACTLY to UK spec so the insurance quotes were astronomical compared to the UK spec car. However I am sure you
know more about this aspect than I do.

>the insurance quotes were astronomical compared to the UK spec car.

I am hoping that the fact that it is a pick-up and not a car will help.

What is CoC paperwork ? And can you remember anything about the companies you looked at which might help me to find them searching the web ?

Thanks so far,

M.

p.s. David - just a thought - but you don´t happen to have the werewithall to do this, do you ?

CoC = certificate of conformity which is usually issued with new euro cars that are being imported directly into the UK by the buyer to prove that it meets all EU regulations and can therefore be registered directly without another test.

Looking for the SVA preparation companies as I write.

Mark,

Try

www.protech-uk.co.uk/sva.htm

Dont know if they are any good but there must be others as well.
I gave up before I got to the SVA stage due to the increased insurance costs.

cheers

Ian L.

ps try searching for 'sva test preparation'

Mark,

I would have the ability to sort this out for you by sussing the requirements and getting contacts but in reality you would be better to deal direct with guys like ones in that link HJ gives. I've had a look at their website and they seem on the ball.

Just beware if they are operating from a tin shed behind a farm gate with a fierce dog.

Mark,

For insurance I use Adrian Flux in Norwich. They specialise in American/unusual stuff and won't say "We don't insure dodgems".

I pay just under £400 p.a for my imported Z28 (FC SDP including breakdown recovery.)

Now I see why........;-)

Wasn't there a car prog on last/this week that featured a Ram?

Wasn't that the one driven by the white bishop's son DJ pretending to be a gangsta cos it's all the rage in that scene?

(In fact wasn't it the same one who got shot/at a while back?)

All allegedly of course.

I'd check that out first!

Mark,

If you do decide to bring the Dodge back to the UK with you stock-up on consumables first.

Wiper blades, oil filters and sump washers, brake pads and light bulbs etc.

Although parts are available in the UK, you sometimes end up having to wait for silly things to be shipped from a distribution centre which can take a week or more.

Also, remove anything likely to get damaged eg. aerial, and if you want to keep your Brazilian No. plates remove them too or they will be stolen.

Good luck, Kevin...
