SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
My better half is bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG and says she fancies something RWD and that's actually quick (think she's jealous of the RS4) and therefore I've been looking at trade ins of the Golf plus a couple of grand.

The only options I can think of for 15-19K are E39 M5 or E46 M3. Which would you choose and can you think of any other options. The car in question must be reasonably practical, fast (ie more than the Golf which is lackluster at best despite it's handling prowess) and not too old or unreliable.

I only see the two BMW's as options- which would you pick and why?
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Pezzer
Is that a bored with 'only' 240+ bhp or a bored with Mk V Golf (which happens to have it) ?
I'm assuming she's an enthusiast.
How about a Monaro ? Cant claim to know much about them and probably the build quality might not be up to German standards, but certainly different.

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
I like the Monaro idea but I'm guessing the HSV is out of our price range. To give you some idea she managed to hamfist her way round the Nurburgring in under 10 mins in the Golf V my oh-so-faster 9.30 ish. Difference is she wasn't sweating like a pig while she did it and also looked good...............

Evo ?
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Pugugly {P}
E39, prettier, more subtle, less of a statement the intelligent choice ! Oh and a stonking good engine that screams.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
EVO 4.5 K service intervals no good plus we already had 3 admittedly inferior Impreza Turbos, rally reps just aren't our thing. Fun but if we wanted something really impractical then we'd go for one of the fat-man Caterhams (so I could fit in it)

My thoughts were similar to pug- E39 offer better value and is miles better built in my experience of our old E39's and E46's. Point is she thinks the E39 is too big, I don't see it myself but you know what women are like when they made their minds up.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Peter S
Depending just how practical you need it to be, a 130i must be available in your budget...slightly more discrete than an ///M

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Pugugly {P}
Good call - that engine is a pearl.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Pezzer
Doh why didnt I think of that !, (I've got its little brother)... but I'm not sure that the power output is much different to the present Golf. It would deffo have all the tail out action you need, but I think the common concensus on the 1series forum is that it needs a LSD.

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Pezzer
Also surprisingly practical with a hatch and folding rear seats.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - cheddar
I vote for the 130i or a 330i as opposed to M3.

However to say someone is *bored* with a £20k MKV Golf GTi is just a little ostentatious when there are people on here struggling to stretch to 15 year old Fiesta.

"However to say someone is *bored* with a £20k MKV Golf GTi is just a little ostentatious when there are people on here struggling to stretch to 15 year old Fiesta."

So I say get the 15 year old Fiesta (hide the Golf). 5 mins later Golf wanted and loved again and give the Fiesta away and have saved a fortune.

Sorry if you find it ostentatious I hadn't thought of it that way. A 330i isn't on the cards we've had a 330 and 330D before. Likewise a 'oner' isn't an option.

Now if the 335i c/c was a bit older and had done a bit of depreciating that would be one I'm sure she'd like. She's also been harping on about the Audi S3 but as I keep trying to tell her it's just a pumped up Golf with semi-permanent AWD.

I think I might show her this thread and suggest the Fiesta.

Apologies accepted.

How about a pumped up Golf with semi-permanent AWD then, an R32 or whatever it is called now?
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
The R32 is no quicker than our GTi plus I'm not sure she'd go for another Golf she seems to think they are too girly. Part of the reason she wants rid is she's been driving my Audi all week and says the Golf is a 'slug'. Maybe I should just do her a swap for a while but I can't see myself driving an auto for the next week and being happy about it.

There should be a suitably scary TVR within budget OH. That'll learn her.

But on another thread you say the 'ergonomics' are all wrong on RHD cars... Was gibt?
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
I wouldn't be buying RHD.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - Kevin
If it will be LHD and she wants something a bit more hairy-chested consider a s/h 'vette or even a Mustang GT.

When faced with a dichotomy, the third option is usually the best.

the third option?

Change the wife! :-)

though it might end up costing slightly more than budget!

What about an M Coupe or M Roadster (Z3)? Or are they too impractical? Apparently lairy handling, as an antidote to the boring Golf.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
She's from Blackpool and has always wanted a TVR- she isn't getting one because

a> Smolenski did the dirty on the workforce

b> There is almost no support for them on the continent.

I like the M coupe idea, the old bread van Z3M Coupe would be perfect. Just going to look on mobile.de right now. As I remember the key thing is to buy one with the later engine and where the boot floor hasn't dropped out!
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - wemyss
My wifes last car was a Maestro diesel which she had for 14 years and cried when it finally went. Now I'm not suggesting you get her one of these as they have become rather scarce and parts can be difficult.
However...Her new car is a Skoda Fabia and these are really the bees knees.
Sound her out on the 1.2 which gives out 64bhp and is very nippy.
wemyss

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
She'd kneecap me. Her mother drives a Fabia VRS.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - blue_haddock
probably fail the practicality test but how about a clio V6?
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - rtj70
I hear there's a VXR220 going cheap
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
Sadly I have to be able to drive the car in comfort and I don't fit in the Opel Speedster, also it doesn't have air con which is a must have.

The problem with the Clio V6 is that it isn't very quick, despite hating the way French cars are built we've considered a Clio Trophy the problem being that there were very few LHD models made and we can't find one. The 182 isn't exclusive enough and too cheap.

And last week you accused me of being vain for owning a private plate costing me £500.

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
I don't remember the personal plate thing last week, perhaps you can link me to it? The reason it's exclusivity matters is in relation to the Trophy which holds it's value. Plus if you have upto 25K to spend why go at the bottom end of the scale unless there's an advantage.

SWMBO knows nothing about cars other than she likes them fast, therefore I choose because she's bored

An S4 is a non-starter because I've got an RS4, not only would it be more of the same she hates being second best.......

SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
I didn't accuse you of being vain. If you read it, I called it a 'vanity plate' which seems like a totally different thing to me, not relating to you at all.

As for forgetting, not likely she just emailed me a link to a load of Caymans she likes the look of.

C32? (assuming a C55 is over budget).
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
My Dad's now got a C32AMG but your name's got me thinking. If she can hang on till the winter sets in I might look at a Boxster S.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
350Z is out of the question- she's won't drive japanese cars. When I had my Impreza she didn't even like being taken out in it. Stupid I know.
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - boxsterboy
Yes, give her a hard top to keep her warm and a bit quiter. They are surprisingly practical with boots front and rear.

I'd second the Mustang GT suggestion.

I recently spent a very happy week in Miami driving a Mustang. Even the base model (with a mere 4000cc) has a real sense of occasion and is fun to drive. Of course it's hideously primitive compared to a VAG product......
SWMBO bored with our 240-260 bhp MKV Golf GTi DSG - OldHand
I like the idea of a Mustang (Shelby GT500 of course) but I'm holding off on the US muscle because there's a very real chance we'll be moving to Texas with my work in the next year or so.

A pick up truck for him (Dodge SRT-10) and the Mustang for her.........
