followed an Astra 2 nights back that had those new brake lights that flash when you stand on the middle pedal hard........are all cars getting them i.e. new legislation or is it a newish gimmick filtering in?
as an aside, i still can't get on with Vauxhall indicators.... they're infuriating

Illegal

iirc, the C4 will do this, but luckily I've not needed to press the pedal so hard as to find out.

Lot's of lighting is technically illegal in the UK, but nothing can be done about it because the car is EU Type Approved.
Off the top of my head, Xenon lights, LED rear lights, cornering lights (front fogs that come on around corners) and rear lights that flash under heavy braking all break UK law.

I am sure with the Scenic if you do an emergency stop (think they call it EBD) then the hazard lights automatically come on as opposed to brake lights flashing.
Not sure what the Altea has yet.

On the renault it had ABS, EBA as well as EBD (electronic brake assist, and electronic brake distribution).

ABS and thats all. No fancy flashing lights of any kind.

As far as I was aware Mercedes managed to get EU legislation changed to allow the S Class to use lights that flash under heavy braking.
|
I'll have to check my handbook, but I thought that on my C4 (and presumably other PSA cars) it was the hazard lights that came on during hard braking.
|
I had a 407 and under heavy breaking the Hazzards flashed, it used to come on really easy if i remember, not always a major brake effort, its quite annoying i felt when your driving round, made you feel a pink fluffy dice when coming into a roundabout fast and the hazzards start flashing, maybe thats why they do it!! To slow you down!
I reckon they will do that on the C4 not brake lights flashing!

Actually come to think of it, it might have been the hazards.

They also have this on the SL's. A new one overtook me last month and had to pull in infront and brake very hard, and the brake lights flashed. (It wasn't him pumping them either, it was a regular and uniform flashing over several seconds).
|
Perhaps it's an adoption of the flashing front and rear cycle lamps feature?
I even saw one cyclist recently with one fixed to the top of his helmet as well. Certainly he became very noticeable - which can only help from the safety point of view.

Looking at a 2007 Vauxhall handbook, it's refered to as "Adaptive Brake light" and to quote from the handbook "During full-on braking##, all three brake lights flash for the duration of ABS control."
## full-on braking:- When brake assist kicks in. "If the brake pedal is slammed on, the vehicle is automatically braked with maximum brake force amplification in order to achieve the shortest possible braking distance when full-on braking occurs"
|
>>to achieve the shortest possible braking distance >>
To be followed, perhaps, by the even better shortest possible braking distance for the driver of the car behind as he/she hits you?

"brake lights flash for the duration of ABS control"
Perhaps so much current is required by the ABS that there isn't any left for the lights...
