Bennetts and any other brokers in the same street as them. (They deliberately choose to open next to their competitors, and vice versa).
Define reasonable - what is your lowest quote for TPF&T so far ?

best quote so far £1500 tpf and t

My lad was asked for silly money for a 2l primera fc , AXA gave him 1 years free ncb which although still dear was affordable at around £1200 not bad for a group 12 car

Also because he has had no claims by applying on line the following year got a 10% extra discount.

Robert,
It may be worth checking ads in the various VW magazines. That' how I got a good deal on my first car, a 1970 pastel white 1300 de luxe beetle, though that was about 20 years ago. Great car.
Good luck

No insurance for a 17 yo is going to be cheap. As you're the main driver, even getting it insured through your parents won't save much money.
As it's a classic car, look in the Classic car magazines for brokers specialising in this sort of business.
You may have to restrict annual mileage (is that an issue?) and it won't be that cheap, but will may beat 'normal' insurance. It depends what you call reasonable, but IIRC a Morris Minor for an under 21 will cost about £400/450 if limited to 3k/yr.

As someone else suggested try www.tesco.co.uk
Gladiator also looks quite good. You submit your details and they email you the prices returned. If you want to take it further you have to pay them £15 for the company info. But you can still find out if your best quote can be beaten before paying out.
I have had a very good price from Athena Insurance (www.athena-insurance.co.uk) for two different drivers/vehicles, so maybe worth a try.
otherwise I find that the only option is go through every broker/company you can find (look at www.find.co.uk) and compare. Last year differnt brokers quoted vastly different premiums on exactly the same policy.
Perhaps you can let us know who quotes the lowest!

When I transferred my 1971 Beetle to my son, when he'd passed his test (aged 17) we insured it in his name with Endsleigh - who specialize in the student market. Of course, it was insured for the minimum cover (third party only - not fire, theft etc) and it excluded his driving any other car using that policy. But my wife and I could drive it under our policies for our other cars.
Worked fine. He built up 3 years' no-claims, then we repeated the process with my daughter when she becamse 17, with equal success. Try Endsleigh.

Robert,
Where you live and where the car is kept overnight(garage/street) have a huge bearing on the premium.
BTW a 1.6 Beetle should be capable of a lot more than 70mph.

I agree. Many years ago I drove a 1974 1303 which had a 1.3 engine and it could do 85 without any problems. Although it took an absolute age to get there (the 0-60 was about 22 seconds)

just out of interest with modern petrol an old beetles cooling system will give up around 70 and number 3 big end goes into meltdown so if you want to get to the end of your journey dont exceed 60 mph
dave
ex beetle enthusiast leave me alone it was the 80s

Dave,
Assuming the fins around the cylinders don't fall off, how does an air cooled engine's cooling system give up?
