Rover Sterling 825 Auto Transmission - pop

Have an intermittent problem with kick-down coming in and shooting revs up to around 4000 plus when in drive and cruising.Box is not slipping gears but also does in in Sport Box mode.Also will change gears rather aggressively at times.More like thumping in on change up or down.Vehicle has only done 60,000 miles from new with two owners.Am told diagnostics on floor pan may isolate fault but not know whether this is Honda or Rover fitting.When doing normal speeds will for a few second or so accellerate r.p.m to over 4000 change into kick down then seconds later revert to normal.
Any idea's ?????

Before doing anything else; check the gearbox fluid level - following the handbook's procedure to the letter.
