Granddaughter telephoned me this morning to say her new Ka has a few problems.
They are as follows.
1. Constant rattling noise coming from passenger side rear quarter.
2. Knocking noise coming from engine at 1500 rpm when warmed up and stationary (constant knocking not intermittent)
Does anyone know what could cause any of the problems.
All help appreciated.

I will get her to take it back.
What could the knocking noise be.
It is brand new milkyjoe it is full of oil i checked it.
Exhaust looks ok too its a one piece system.

The point is it could be anything from annoying on a scale of 1 to being darnright dangerous and i wouldnt drive 4 feet in it
thats why she has noticed it and it wants prioritising NOW

now then mate, it could just be valve clearance noise, the earlier ka engine were a bit prone to cam lobe wear and also piston slap which was also a problem with the fiestas, which some had the same engine. but it is hard to say exactly without hearing it. but definately take it back. hope it goes well

Ford Ka's are renowned for noises coming from the front suspension, especially wishbones and bushes, but certainly not on a brand new car... When you say new, do you mean brand new or just newly acquired? Is it a 1.3 or a 1.6, pushrod (older style) or overhead cam? Obviously, if it is brand new then get Ford to sort it. If not, then it could be a number of things. (Point of interest, does it actually have a rev counter? The last Ka I sat in didn't...). The old pushrod engines (1.3 Endura) did tend to get a bit tappity after a certain length of time, easy enough to reset the tappits but again, only applicable if its a few years old. One point to bear in mind, no matter how old the car is. The combination of the aerodynamics at the front and the angle and presentation of the spark plugs makes this car suck spray off the roads onto the tops of the plugs. Make sure they get changed regularly, otherwise they rust into the head, and they won't be easy or cheap to remove... You have been warned!

I can confirm it is a brand new Ka zetec climate 1.3 duratec SOHC it was registered 23/04/07
The Knocking noise occurs very slightly at 1000 but is more pronounced at 1500.
It has a rev counter.
It occurs whilst stationary and you can hear it when slowing down so it must be coming from the engine.
It still happens when the clutch is pushed down so it must not be the gearbox.
I will nudge her to take it back.

Just to let you all know.
Finally got the Granddaughter to get her car in.
The mechanic took the car out and heard the noise. Hoorah.
Hopefully it will be fixed.
Has anyone else also noticed how bad these ka's are on fuel. 300 miles from 1 tank is appalling.

Will this improve with mileage then. When you say tight engine do you refer to tight tolerances.
It has still only done 1500 miles so i hope it improves a little more.
Wife's 1.4 petrol fiesta has got up to 420 out of 43 litres which i think is a much heavier car.

Ka tank is nominally 40l. but I doubt that you will get more than 36/37l. out of it.Tight tolerances,particularly pistons in bores will need about 2/3000 m. to get really free.

They even checked with ford to see if there was a tsb about it.

reminds me of the time I volunteered to service my sister's Ka including a plug change. No 1 plug snapped like a carrot as soon as I tried to undo it, everything proud of the head (including the hex part) coming away cleanly in the socket, and everything else staying put.
Managed to drill it out without damaging the head, but I left the other three well and truly where they were.
Overall this was the rustiest engine I have ever seen. Big flakes of iron oxide everywhere.

Talk of piston slap or noisy tappets doesn't explain the noise from the back.
Take it to a good exhaust centre and ask them to check the security and alignment of the exhaust, it can't do any harm. If they solve the problem take the bill to your Ford dealer and tell them to pay it.
Ford service centres are the pits, literally!
If the problem doesn't exist on their computer, you don't have a problem.!

Any Ka from 2002 on has the Rocam(South African) OHC not the Valencia OHV;plugs and exhaust are not in the same place.Chain cam and hydraulic tappets as well.

My 1.3 N reg was never in that state. Of course the leaking rocker cover gasket that for a while left the car smelling like a refinery when it got hot, could be related to that. ;o)
I'd just oil soak the block. Messy, smelly, but does the trick, and the smell soon goes.

But quickly.
They are trying to fob her off. and hope she will do nowt.

Its the newer rocam engine.
I suppose it could be the oil pump or water pump but surely not a new car.
The noise is from the engine compartment not the rear of the car.
It is like someone knocking continuesly at your front door.

If you still have the above, you have either two problems or the same thing is causing both.
What connects from the engine in the front to the rear of the Ka.......?
or...
"It is like someone knocking continuously at your front door."
Have you thought of a door bell..lol......

The Rattling from the rear quarter was cured. It was wiring underneath the car.
The knocking noise is coming from the engine.
I will ignore the sarcasm and remain old and mature.
