driving on the left? - milkyjoe
i was always told we drive on the left in britain because of days gone by when a knight would be able to defend himself better with his sword hand( right in most cases) agains an attack from oncoming enemy, if this is true whay does most of europe drive on the left, they had swordsman as well didnt they?

The following seems plausible, but I wouldn't vouch for it:

Re the right handed swordsman I saw an interesting programme about Welsh castles in which it was noted that in most cases the spiral stairs turned to the right as one ascended them. This was (allegedly) so that a right handed defender had his sword arm on the outside of the spiral and had an easier sweep of his sword, whereas the attacker, coming up the stairs, had his sword action restricted by being close to the centre of the spiral. Could be true?

How come so many drivers switch to driving in the far right lane on motorways and dual-carriages ? Thought they were for overtaking only.
