Is it worthwhile re-gassing my air conditioning with a recharge canister from Halfords? The car is a year 2000 model which I have just bought. I doubt that the air-con has been serviced in recent years. Do I need to spend out on a specialist service or do those canisters work?

All previous replies on this topic all say get it done properly and avoid any DIY.

They are fine for topping up when the gas pressure is low due to natural wastage (usually when there is enough gas for the compressor to still cut in and out as a rough guide). However if the system is very low on gas or empty any diy topping up would quite likely only provide a short term fix. In this case it's best to get the system professionally leak tested rather than waste money on the recharge canisters. Bear in mind that an empty system needs vacuuming out so it's not really possible to re-gas after repairs without a vac pump. Best regards

My neighbour who is a manager at Kwick-fit said last year they decided to install a lot of air-conditionig equipement as obviously this is a growing area of service. I believe its £44.95p for a recharge etc. They say at least a 10% improvement or its free.
Brother used it and said the service seems OK.

Kwik-fit for aircon, didn't know that. I imagine that the tyres are getting low and the shocks need replacing however.....

Kwik-Fit will only recharge the system if it is currently working. The're not getting into finding leaks, diagnostics etc.
