I have a Rover 400 two litre petrol "V" reg. The front offside brakes have a knocking sound felt through the brake pedal when slowing from around 20 miles an hour for instance coming up to a junction. If I brake hard there is no knocking. My local garage fitted new discs and pads around 2,000 miles ago and has said the brakes are fine to use but is at a loss to see what the problem might be.
Any ideas welcome....

Are you getting a knocking when turning hard as well, poss it may be CV joints??

No knocking when turning on full lock or normal unless breaking at slow speeds....

Get them to check the disc runout,it could be a distorted disc.

I would recomend a close inspection of the brake disc to see if there is any imperfection on the disc! are the wheel bolts tight? quite common if you have alloy wheels & new disc's been fitted!
Is it a knocking or could it be the ABS? is the pedal pulsing. If a reluctor ring cracks on the shaft it will make the ABS pulse at low speeds on one wheel!

many thanks, fantastic help guys especially as i`m not near a Rover garage and only use my local. It gives them something to go on!

Just a a final note.... The car went into the garage this morning and they found a broken reluctor ring. Although they would not just replace the ring on its own they have ordered the `CV ball joint` that has the ring already fitted so problem solved. Thank you again for the help, its nice to go into a garage with a bit of technical knowledge!
A note for anyone else looking for a replacement reluctor ring for Rover and MG cars I have found a good web site supplying them and for those that want to do their own repairs they even show how to do that as well. www.reluctorrings.com
