SWMBO picked up an expensive thorn (new Bridgestone Potenza for the EOS).
Tyres fitted are 235/45 R16 97W Extra Load.
Thought this was a bit OTT so checked the book which does not tell me what tyres to fit - It does not mention tyre sizes anywhere!
Rang the dealer - very helpful, could tell me what was fitted to our car from the reg. no. but not what the VW minimum spec is! Could not even tell me what is fitted as standard on the 16" wheels unless I could give him a chassis/reg no of a car! Suggested I ring VW Customer Service.
Customer service clearly don't understand and said they did not have this information, asked me to ring some other dealers.............because they may have more experience of the car! What I want is what VW tell the dealers, not what the dealers may have experienced, I thought that VW, being a German company, would have this easily to hand - along the lines of "YOU WILL NOT FIT TYRES OF LOWER THAN..."
When it becam obvious that they would not do anything else until I called some other dealers I decided to go through the motions - the list of dealers was nothing special - just the same list the VW website gives if I put my postcode in.
So far one was honest and said they have no information and suggested I call Customer Service. From two others I have different answers, one said 97W or higher and the other looked at a car in the showroom and came up with 93Y - so this might not meet the VW spec.
Went back to customer service and explained and they suggested I e-mail "Erwin" - the answer will be intersting when I work out how to e-mail him as the contact details refer you back to your county importer (Probably VW customer service in the UK)
It does say something in the book about having technical information readily available to answer queries on the car!

Go to VW website and download the EOS brochure - page 14. 16 inch standard fit are 215/55/16. Problem is this is the current brochuire and may have changed since you bought yours. BTW friedsn of ours are having real problems with a leaky Eos roof - back in all next week for it to be fully dismantled.
|
That bit is easy, it is actually the bit after the R16 they cannot tell me!
Ours hasn't leaked at all, stood out in the rain all but 4-5 days over xmas.

Is it not safer just to fit the same tyre that was on it, the same, presumably, as the other 3 that are on it?
I can see why on older cars you might want to shop around, or even if when you are buying in pairs, but if I was buying a single then it would be the same as the others already on it.
Or am I missing something here?.

Seconded!

What are you hoping to achieve? Is it the W rating that you find expensive? If you change to a lower speed rating, it could become even more expensive! BTW, Erwin is a technical resource on subscription, via Volkswagen. erwin.volkswagen.de/erwin/showHome.do;jsessionid=A...1 However, Volkswagen UK must have information on tyres; ask customer service to speak to their technical section. There is one: its just that customer service don't want us to know!

What engine is in the car?
For the higher-power diesels, VW factory fit a minimum of V rated and with 16" or above alloys it will be a W. The factor here is the high torque output of the engines.

If you tell the tyre garage what the weight of the car is and its maximum speed they can tell you what you need.
Or you can decode the letters on the sidewall with a google search: www.tyres-online.co.uk/techinfo/sidewall.asp

You have spent approx £20K on a car and carping about the price of a replacement tyre and looking around for a cheaper replacement.
Brand new car with 3 good tyres and 1 odd one (may be less good).
I rest my case - pay the money and buy the Bridgestone - put it down to bad luck and move on.......
|
The point of the post was not the cost of the tyre (if you check you will see that a matching potenza was purchased - £150 fitted)
My concern is that VW appear not to be able to tell me what the tyres shoud be, just what they are! - this is a great help for used buyers when the car may not be on the right tyres!
I am looking ahead to when these wear out to find out just what it needs, trying to save few pennies by not overspeccing. i.e. if VW are selling a new EOS on 18" 93s in Stafford why does ours (2.0FSI) need 97 Extra Load.
It is only 110kg heavier than the Accord Tourer which is on 91s

VW dont know what tyres are fitted to. When the Ran shredded the tyre (and left me with no spare, usless goo and useless pump), the lease co got Kwik fit mobile invoved,
Call from Kwik Fit kiwkly followed, "please tell us the W rating of your existing tyres as VW dont know what they fit"

The answer is...
Answer has come back...
"Thank you for your e-mail and the question contained within it.
According to the workshop manual the specification (size) of tyre you are seeking is 235/45 R 17 94V.
94 = 670 kg load
V = 240km/h
We hope this information is sufficient for your needs"
So why did they put 97 W Extra Load on - perhaps Bridgestone wanted to shift some stock!
Gives me some more flexibility when it comes to changing pairs.

Quite normal, my Mondeo came with 91Ws, when I was checked I was advised that 89Vs are fine so ran it on Bridgstones of that spec, now on Falkens which are 93Y.
