Can anyone tell me what is a good quality brand of Dexron III transmission fluid ?
we have several automatic cars at home, and I wanted to change hte fluid on a regular basis to prolong the life of the gearboxes, as its simple to do.
Halfords only sell Comma Dexron III in decent sized (5litre) bottles. The other "big-name" brands like Castrol etc. are all small 1litre top-up bottles, and obviously very expensive if youare doing a complete change to get it in these quanitites.
Is Comma a "good quality" brand or is it just bargain basement, and what other brand should I be looking at and where can Iget it in decent sized quantities without breaking the bank ?
We are running newer shape Civic and Celica, do a lot of town driving, so gearbox-heavy work so want decent fluid to protect !
I'm based Sutton/Croydon area if anyone knows of an outlet, or willing to buy online if people can point me to a site.

I've used Comma, amongst other brands, for at least 20 years and its products are stocked by the vast majority of car products outlets.
I wouldn't have any qualms using Dexron III for your purpose.

I dont know what halfords will charge for 5 litres but suspect its more than a local auto factor?
I purchased 5 litres about 2 months ago and the total price was well less than £15
check it out Surrey_Scientist.......bro
you dont need an account just common sense (dont go saturday mornings with the other divs if you get my drift) :-)

I have about 10-15 litres of Texaco Texamatic 7045E DIIIG in it's drum. (It was £42 a much cheaper way of buying it)
It is top-spec for 'life time' fills.
You can have it for free if you can pick up from NG5 or NG11 Nottingham!

I meant it was £42 for 25 litres! try the local Total distributor.

Depends how much you want to spend. Top-spec synths like Castrol Z, Amsoil, etc come out very dear - £10+ a litre, but the best choice for transmissions that spec an HFM DIII and/or suffer lock-up clutch shudder.
Comma is a cheap and cheerful mineral DIII that will be fine for most cars.
Probably the best compromise is to try your local GM dealer for a 25 litre drum of their own-brand DIII - this is good quality (DIII is a GM proprietry spec) and should cost around the £50 mark, depending on what discount they give you.

Hamsafar, do u still have any of this 7045E oil ?
I need some fairly quick.
Can pick up asap (and will be happy to pay for it)

Sorry, no, it was over a year ago, I couldn't give it away for toffee, and it took up room in the shed, and so it ended up in the waste oil container at the tip, which is a big shame, as it is probably much the best DIII you can buy. Sorry.

I have used Commer for years and its very good. If I had several automatics I would consider buying a large drum as 2-3 changes will use it easily. Having it there also encourages you to change it more often!

Depends what the car is. You wouldn't want to use it on some transmissions (e.g the Mitsi designed units on Mitsi/Kia/Hyundai), or Honda or Toyota T-4 spec'd transmissions. Must better to go with OEM or wide-range HFM synthetics ATF's.

Thanks for the info...
"wide range HFM synthetic ATF" - can you give me a few brand/product names and an idea of where to go ?
Most motor factors seem to have just Dexron II or III with brand names I haven't heard of expcept for Comma, I am assuming this is bog-standard mineral-based.
Are there any online stores that stock this synthetic stuff at a reasonable price - I have tried doing a few google searches to buy online but haven;t yet come across a UK supplier - all the synthetic stuff I 've found for sale so far is in the US ( as I suppose they all mainly drive autos)...
Many thanks guys !

Semi O/T - how long would an auto box last with no mainteance whatsoever?
Parents Proton 'thing' has never had it done, to my knowledge.

Amsoil ATF; Castrol Transmax Z; Redline D4. etc etc. All these are available in the UK, but they are all £10+ a litre retail.
For Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi use Diamond SP-III
Honda need Hondamatic (Honda Z-matic ??).
Some Toyota/Lexus should have Toyota T-IV
Subaru likewise their own brand.
