My Alfa is coming up to 3 years old next month, and I received the tax renewal stuff in the post today. The car was first registered on the 19th April 04. The letter from the tax people says I can renew the tax disc any time after the 15th March. Does this mean I'd need to get my MOT early, or, because it will still have a month to go will it be ok MOT wise? (The reason I want it taxing close to the 15th is that there is a budget on 21st so will no doubt see a tax rise!). Thanks in advance.

I am in the same position but with different dates! SFAIK if you buy your tax disc on the due date you get one year's tax quite legally. You then have to get the car MOT'd on or before the due date; I think that, even for a first one, you can have it done up to 1 month early and have the certificate dated from the date it was due.

I tried to renew the tax on our 3 year old Jazz at the end of Aug last year, when it wasn't 3 until mid Sept, but the online option didn't exist. Once the car had been MOT'd then the online option appeared very quickly.
I rpesume from this that you'd have the same issue at the Post Office?
The renewal didn't even offer the online option (we have another car that was 2 at the same time, and its renewal came with all the log-in details).
Of course you can get post-date an MOT by up to a month (take your V5 to the testing station) which would just about work for you. Not sure if it can be done even earlier, or if you're strictly limited to a month.

In the past it was possible, at a PO, to buy tax for a year on, say, 1st June for a car due an MOT on 15th, ie if it is less than 3 years old it doesn't need an MOT and you can buy a tax disc for it.. Maybe on line has made it different or difficult so support your local PO!

If the car reaches 3 yrs old before the new disc tax becomes valid - presumably 1st May - then you need an MOT as the rules state that you need an MOT valid for the start date of the disc, NOT the day you get the disc. Ive fallen foul of this before and had to rush an MOT thro as a result.
From what you say, your Alfa will be over 3 yrs old by the time your new disc comes into force, thus you need an MOT in order to tax it.

If your tax expires at the end of March, and your MOT isn't due until the 19th April, then you can renew online because the MOT doesn't expire in the same month that your tax is due.
However, isn't there some kind of clause that if the RFL increases, you will have to pay the increase in price anyway?

Taken from www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ (then click on "common questions" and finally "Insurance & MOT/GVT Checking")
My car tax is due for renewal on the 1st of the month but my MOT Test Certificate expires the day before. Can I apply for a tax disc now?
No. The MOT Test Certificate must be valid on the day the tax disc comes into force.

So, to summarise if I have it correctly - if you buy tax starting on 1st April and you rcar is due an MOT on 20th April you can butya tax disc valid for one year because, on 1st April, the car was either less than 3 years old or had an MOT vaid to 20th April.

That was exactly the situation I was in (mentioned earlier) and I couldn't renew online. The option didn't exisit. As soon as the car had been MOT'd the system then let me in and I could renew.

Thanks for the replies. DD, from what you say I should be ok to get the tax disc early, as I will have 20 days MOT left on the first day the tax is "valid". I dont think you have to pay any increase in duty, as long as you get the tax disc before the budget. There is a warning on the tax reminder that the price is correct at time of printing but if it increases in the budget this will change.

If it will need it then the V11 renewal form will say near the bottom left, in a different typeface to the rest of the guff "An appropriate MOT test certificate" (I have one in front of me.
If your road tax is due to start on the 1st of the month, all that is needed is insurance and MOT that is current for that date.
Don't forget, you can get an MOT a month early on a first MOT by taking the V5 along with you to get it forward dated.

Just thought I'd update you.....
Bought the tax disc online today, no problems. No extra to pay if it goes up in the budget next week either.

OP is in much same position as somebody with a 13 year old car whose MoT expires in mid April. As long as MoT is valid or not required when licence comes into force i.e. later of purchase date or 1st of month follwing expiry of prev disc then no (new) MoT is required
|
Just remember that if you do get tax without needing an MOT, you still need to get the MOT when it falls due. If it's the first ever MOT it is very easy to forget, as you are not actually renewing it, and they don't send reminders that the three years is up.
