I tried renewing my tax disc online last night, only to find that no record existed on the 'insurance database'. "What!!!", I thought - then realised to my horror that I'd not mentioned the car's personal plate change to my insurers. The certificate of insurance still has the old registration number on it.
Before I even attempt it, is there any point going down to the post office to renew the tax? The tax disc reminder, MoT and V5C all have the new registration number but, as mentioned above, the insurance certificate still refers to the old number. I still have all the paperwork (including the old MoT certificate) returned from DVLA which shows the old number and stamped as "Cherished transfer re-registered as ....(new number)".
In my experience, post office counter staff can be 'jobsworths' when it comes to car tax - seemingly suspecting that you're trying to pull a fast one. So would it be better just to advise my insurers (which of course I will do) and wait for the details to be updated on the database (any ideas how long that would take?) before applying online again?

No-one is being a jobsworth - they simply check that the reg on the insurance doc is the same as the reg on the V5/renewal form. If the same, then fine, if not, then they spin it, which is fair enough.

remember you will probably have to declare "sorn" today whilst you await your new ins cert, or the "computer" may send you a bill! , you cant hide.......

In my experience most insurance co's will send out an updated certificate very quickly if you phone them. Usually sent out same day by first class post. You can then tax it at the PO.

Thanks Aprilia - just done it!!

I reckon the database updates overnight, so you may find you can re-tax online tomorrow, which is no help if you want to drive it tomorrow, I realise.

Why wait until the last minute?
A "personal plate" implies the OP isn't short of a bob or two. Tax can be renewed up to fourteen days in advance!

Sorry, the butler forgot to do it.

God there are some pompous prats on here! It isn't a question of the money I find but the time needed to do it!

You wait, someone will be along in a minute to maintain its all his own fault because he's stupid for having a "personal plate" in the first place.

i was wondering if he was insured or not. He had insurance on the car, but the number plate has changed. So, technically is he insured or not.
My first thought was definitely not, but then changed my mind. Eventually came to the conclusion that it would be an easy get out clause for the insurance co.
Any thoughts?

He will be insured. The number is not a material fact. A number won't stop or cause an accident. The Insurer has taken the money and been placed on risk. No court of law will uphold retention of a payout/claim because of an incorrect number. It is not a MATERIAL FACT.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression - the plate was bought for £250 in 1998 and kept on retention until I could afford to buy an S-registered car to put it on. If that qualifies as 'not short of a bob or two' then so be it......
As to leaving things to the last minute - well that's just me. It's always the trivial things that get forgotten about - apologies if I'm the only one this happens to.

Personal plate on SWMBO's car is a three letter/two digit combo and might be worth a bob or two. However it's on loan from her mother who in turn got it in 1950 from the normal run allocated to a Birmingham dealer.
