I just got a shock over the phone from my current insurance company. I've had a Toyota Starlet and just bought a Volvo S40, called my insurance to change the vehicle on the policy and they're asking me to pay additional £509 for the remaining 6 months. Whereas I've rung other companies, including MoreThan with whom I've got another car covered and they've quoted me £539 for the whole year. What shall i do? Shall I just get a new policy with someone else and let the old policy on the old car until it expires or shall I call my current insurance company and ask them to cancel it? I could tell them to insure me on say Micra or Fiesta to reduce the premium but I don't know if that's right! Please help.

Is it a bonus earning year or are you already at maximum ?
Were you speaking with an insurer or a broker ?
Did the change include an increase in cover or change in driving restrictions ?
What's the other vehicle ? Is it a smaller vehicle ? Does it have similar bonus entitlement to the Volvo/starlet ?
Could you change the Starlet policy to this other vehicle and change the other vehicle policy to the Volvo ?

I had an accident and it was my fault so no its not a bonus earning year!
I've got 4 years protected no claims bonus which I earned and am using at the other car. I've rung 2 insurance companies so far (more than and a broker) and they both have told me I could use my protected no claims on my new car VOLVO too.
The change is just change of vehicle, all the other details would remain the same.
The other vehicle is a Polo and the only reason I don't want to change the around is because me and my MRS we both are insured on Polo while I'm the only one who'll be insured on Volvo because putting her as the second driver would increase the premium.
Help please!!!!!!!!

Do a substitution of vehicle from Starlet to Polo
Add wife as additional driver to Starlet/Polo policy
Do a substitution of vehicle from Polo to Volvo
Remove wife as additional driver on Polo/Volvo (if it affects premium).
Get quotes for all of above [you're unlikely to achieve anything more economic] and then at renewal of both vehicles hunt around for alternatives.
>>they both have told me I could use my protected no claims on my new car VOLVO too.
"too" as in additional ? Additional to what ? Sounds like uneducated comment to me.

Thanks for your replies No FM2R. What I meant in the above sentence was the fact that MoreThan and an Insurer Broker I spoke to, told me that I could use my no claims bonus on Polo and Volvo.
