The last one reminded me of something I saw on Top Gear once - someone had rebuilt a 601S with a tubular steel chassis and had put in disc brakes and a 1275cc Mini Cooper engine, enabling (thanks to the light weight) a sub-9 sec 0-60, IIRC. That sort of thing has always amused me, don't know why...

Speaking of Trabants, I have one, a 1989 601 S De Luxe. It's up for sale soon, if anyone is interested.

Photos and details on request. It's green with a white roof and in VGC.

Does it have the 2-stroke engine? I suspect not at that vintage? I'm interested in getting a 2-stroke one (with a new MOT on it).
Trabants - stevied
Mine is one of the last 2 stroke engined ones, and has 11 months MOT. Had a fair bit of work done on it, run it at least 2/3 times a week, needs some little bits doing but nothing significant.. if you want to have a look let me know. I am based in Cheshire.

I have a Trabant in fact two one is for spares it is one of last of the production line with the 1100 polo engine ,disc brakes and believe you me it has no problem exceeding 160km on the autobahn.Although people wanted to and did get rid of them in there thousands it is now becoming a cult car with prices to prove a neighbour has a genuine Kugel and that is worth mega money.

By the way Trabant is German for Satalite.

If anyone wants to contact me about the Trabi, I've put my e-mail on my profile.

I saw my first Trabbi well before the Wall came down, prob 1985. We went through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin in a show-off shiny black raised Range Rover with Britsih Army plates and a checkerplate roof-platform so we could look over the wall of the East German and Russian army barracks.

The East Germans were riding around in Trabbis, and you should have seen their faces when they saw the Range Rover - to them it was a spaceship from Mars, or perhaps better.

The Russians had access to West Berlin and came in Lada saloons.

I thought is was irresponsible when my son begged me to by it but its doubled in value more than I can say for any car I have owned before.
