Fiesta cooling fan curiosity - frazerjp
When i pull into a car park & switch off the engine after coming off the motorway, the cooling fan of my Fiesta Zetec (03 reg) switches itself on for about minute.
Is this correct or is it a sign of overheating after a long run & do other cars have this gimmick too?

I have had this over the years, especially as I live on a steep hill and when I get in the fan will often run for some time.

It all comes down to how the fan is wired, if it is on an unswitched supply, then it can run due to heat-soak from the engine raising the coolant temperature above the themostat trigger point.

It is quite normal when the engine is good and hot (even more so on a hot day).

caution... be careful when looking under the bonnet if you are wearing a tie or loose clothing just in case the fan decides to go for a spin when you thought youd switched it all off!

I've never understood the point of this feature. Unless the car has an electric water pump, what is the point of cooling the radiator but not the engine?

I could understand this more if the fan reversed to take air out of the engine compartment instead they pump more heat into the components;Fiestas (and all other Fords) never had it in the past.

the fan is designed to come on when you are sitting in traffic and the engine running as there is no air flow coming thru from outside and the coolent gets hot unlike old cars that had the fan constantly turning whilst the engine was running
