Hi fellow car fanatics...
A friend has offered to fix my girlfriends fiat cinciquento and says she needs a rear offside brake plate?
I believe it is the bit that the back brake fastens on to... is this right? If I go into a fiat parts dealer, will they know what a rear offside brake plate is?!?!
Following on from that, if anyone knows of a fiat parts dealer that sells online or over the phone that could supply the above part by post, that would help.... or somewhere near stoke on trent / stafford that I could buy one from..
Thanks

Well he could mean the brake back plate but you really need to be sure before you order it. Unless you know or he tells you exactly what it is that the car needs then there is little point in ordering parts that could easily end up being the wrong thing.

We have a 1997 Cinque where both rear drum back plates just rusted right through. In addition the handbrake actuating levers within the drums were seized and the hand brake cable needed replacing to complete the job. Cost about £200 in parts alone on a car with a value around £400 so if you need to pay for the job to be done it may not be worth it. You could try a scrappie but I suspect this is a common problem and what's available may not be worth having.
I should think the back plates will only be available from a dealer who will have to order them but they will come quite quickly.

Thanks very much Simon and especially doctorchris,
This is a 97 Cinque also and the friend of a friend said that the plate has pin holes in it and so it will eventually rust straight through....
Its just passed its mot today without the new plate, but he advised to get it done ASAP.
As part of getting it through the MOT I think it had to have a new handbrake cable as we kept tightening and tightening the old one over about 2 years but it wouldn't tighten any more so we replaced it. Thing it also had new "pads and shoes" on the back brakes (could be wrong about that) so not sure how much all that will cost but think he only charges about £10 an hour mates rates....
Will give Fiat a ring tomorrow and find out how much the brake plate will be!
Cheers both again for your help

If it is only pin holed and has passed its MOT okay then I would be tempted to leave alone until next year. It isn't going to do much harm apart from rusting itself through and if the parts are quite expensive why spend the money now when you don't have to. I don't wish to be pessimistic, but it could get written off tomorrow.

When the time comes and if you decide to go to a Fiat parts counter, the rear offside brake plate, referred to by Fiat as a " Plate " is part number 4373451. This part is the same across the Cinq range.

Thanks Petel!! How the hell do you know that? I assume you work for Fiat or more likely have a cinque?
