Run Flat tyres - alapppy
Hi
I drove a BMW 3 series today and the ride felt very hard. The salesman said that run flats make no difference to the ride quality as they now have been improved greatly. Does anyone have any comments to make on this?

Thanks
Alan

Very low profile tyres fitted?

In my experience (12,000 miles in a MINI, 8,000 miles in an E90 330i, 18,000 miles in an E61 535d and 7,000 miles in a 120d all on runflats) they definitely give the ride a rather 'knobbly' feel, which is especially noticeable when the tyres are cold. My father changed the tyres on his '05 E61 from runflats to non runflats after 15,000 miles and says the ride is far better than before, on the same size/profile tyres

Dealer claims that the car is only set up for run flats and cannot be changed over.

I drive a 3 series now and I would not describe the ride as hard (16 inch wheels with runflats).
It is firm - I know when the hamster test drove the 3 for TG he did think BMW had matched the run flats and chassis better on the 3 than on any other model.

I think 3-series have always had a tendency towards a "firm" suspension whether on normal or run-flats. What have you been driving previously?

Yes the new three rides a lot better on runflats. The E61 suffers I suspect. (Last three cars having been 5s 1 on std tyres 2 on runflats)

Anyone here tried the S-max with run-flat tyres? You don't get a spare wheel with any of the options, so it seems as if Ford has designed the car with run-flats in mind, but I wonder if this is borne out in the way it feels. (I've only driven one with standard tyres on 16" wheels; the run-flats are on 17".)
