Corolla vvti old advice - stevek
Hope someone who is knowledgeable about oils could help me please?

2001 1.4 Corolla with the vvti engine.

When I checked the oil level recently it was below the end of the dipstick and took about 1.5 litres to be around midway on the disptick. At the same time I was getting a sound from the top of the engine which I suspect was camshaft noise as the oil was not lubricating the camshaft correctly.

Now the oil is topped up the noise has disapeared but I want to change the oil this weekend and instead of the 5/30 oil that is recomened would I be better using a 10/40 oil that is thicker at working temperatures so that the cam lubrication is improved.

Also it seems the engine is using oil at a rapid rate but I cannot see any leaks or signs of it being burnt. The plugs are not oiled. So its a little mystery.

There are reports of oil consumption problems on Toyota VVTi engines, have a chat with your local dealer, or maybe google it? Best to stick to Toyotas recommendations on the oil front, especially the cold viscosity figure (5 in this case), as perhaps the clearances are tight, a thicker oil would not improve cam lubrication!!!
