Ladies and Gents,
My 1995 Golf 1.8GL, decided to cut out the other day when I was driving through a set of roadworks and I had to get a tow to a local garage.
Whilst I was waiting for the tow truck, I took off one of the HT leads and held it close to the engine to see if I had a spark whilst my wife tried the ignition. There was no spark. I took off the distributor cap and it looked okay inside.
Am I right in saying that I am looking at one of the following being at fault :
1) Distributor 2) Coil 3) Crankshaft Position sensor ?
Any ideas / suggestions / troubleshooting tips would be most appreciated.

What youve said, also rotor arm, ECU or coil lead (not familiar with this engine so not sure of its set up).

Most common failure of no spark is the coil amplifier unit ,Bolted to bulkhead ,rear of engine bay.

Was the Cam shaft turning? Could also be a cam belt failure

Is this the one with the hall effect sensor in the dizzy. Worth testing with a meter to check the impedane. was it about 1200 ohms, I'm not in the garage right now. Regards Peter
