I have just got a 1.8t 20v sport passat(yr 2000), on start up for 4-5 seconds there is a noise like a pump running dry, you can hear it from inside the car also it returns when at tickover but increase revs even a bit and it dissapears,it appears to be from the top ned but at all times it is a fast clacking/ticking noise not half engine speed as i would have thought. any ideas? Cheers. Ray

It's the Cam Chain Adjuster at the back of the cylinder head.
From the Passat Forum :
"There are at least four different possible causes for cam chain rattle.
1) The CCA is oil-starved because of a blockage in either the oil pump screen or the CCA's oil screen.
2) The CCA is oil-starved on hot idle and/or on cold start because of leakdown through the cam seals.
3) The CCA is oil-starved on hot idle and/or on cold start because of leakdown through the CCA gasket. This is generally accompanied by a smell of burning oil on idle.
4) The CCA itself is so worn that it can no longer dampen the chain's vibrations properly."
So either you have low oil pressure of the CCA is shot.....
