injectors Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 Petrol - htickle232@aol.com
I'm trying to find out if the injectors on the Carlton should be replaced. The car has done 98,000+. I've recently experienced an increase in petrol consumption. Any suggestions please????
Re: injectors Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 Petrol - Pete@theGarage
Apart from the obvious reasons for high consumption ie regular servicing, air filter, oil filter, oil , breathers, high fuel pressure etc, the injectors are lifed for one billion cycles. This is about 160,000 miles. So yours are over half-way through. If you run on supermarket petrol, the injectors will suffer a build-up of lacquer and this will upset the spray pattern. The supermarket petrol is significant as it contains less detergent than proper branded stuff. (That's why it's cheap - it's crap)

The poor spray pattern will cause incomplete combustion and you will be throwing unburnt fuel out of your exhaust.

The solution is to have the injectors serviced i.e. they are ultrasonically cleaned and the filters are replaced. A decrease in fuel consumption of 5% would not be unusual and your emissions will go down as well (better for the MoT)

I saw a BMW 525 go from 20mpg to 25mpg after we cleaned & serviced the injectors.

Good luck!

I forgot to mention the fuel system cleaner-type additives you can buy - we sell them and they have their uses.

Consider this though - on the Carlton, all the petrol you buy goes through a tiny little filter in your injectors, smaller than your little fingernail. If you clean the fuel system out, any lurking gunge will end up trapped forever in these filters. Its cheaper to have the service done on the injectors than to replace.

does "crap" apply to ALL supermarket petrol?
Re: injectors Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 Petrol - Pete@theGarage
Well it is a subjective term! You try getting supermarkets to reveal what goes in their petrol.

HJ may have some up to date info with his contacts. I think he advises to use a 'branded' fuel such as Texaco.

A diffrent slant - if as Pete says the injectors are only half-way there, I'd keep them and throw the Carlton away, because the rear structural members will be corroded out about now!

Supermarket unleaded is the same as branded unleaded. It comes from the same distribution tank / pipeline. The only difference are the additives.

In answer to the original question about injectors, try using a dose of Redex Injection Cleaner every 1,000 miles.
