i have an escort 18 tddi on a 2000 plate i think my idle speed is a bit high can any one tell me what it is supposed to be and how to ajust it correctly thanks

My Mondeo uses the same engine, and that is supposed to be 850 RPM (+/- 50). The trouble is the dash rev counter is not accurate enough to use to set the idle revs. The only way you can do it without an accurate diesel tachometer is to set it "by ear". It also depends what diesel pump your engine has - some use CAV Rotodiesel (Lucas) and some use Bosch. The process isn't radically different for either, but some of the components are in different places. My comments relate to the CAV pump, as that's what I have.
Open the bonnet and first of all find the diesel injector pump. It's mounted on the front of the engine about 2/3 of the way up the block at the cambelt end of the engine. Two cables go to the pump - one is the throttle (technically inaccurate, but you know what I mean) cable, the other is the idle up cable which disappears off towards the passenger side of the car. This is where it's easy to make a mistake. DON'T adjust the accelerator lever stop as you would on a carburettor. What you want is the other lever which the other cable attaches to - this is the idle/stop lever. There will be a small screw (bolt) and locknut on this lever which on the CAV pump is towards the engine with the bolt head facing the front of the car. This basically adjusts the rest position of the idle lever. This is what you need to adjust.
Slacken off the locknut (you might need to soak this in WD or Plus Gas for a while) and wind the nut out a few turns without moving the bolt itself - this will give you plenty of adjustment without the locknut getting in the way. When you've done this, slowly turn the bolt head until you get the idle speed you want (it doesn't take much turning to make a difference). When you're happy with the result, carefully nip up the locknut without allowing the bolt to move. This doesn't need to be stupidly tight, just enough to stop the bolt turning by itself.
